Hempstead, NY - The nationally ranked Hofstra University men's soccer team will close out the regular season Saturday afternoon when it hosts UNCW at Hofstra Soccer Stadium in a Colonial Athletic Association battle. Game time is 12 p.m.
A Hofstra victory will give the Pride the CAA regular season championship and the top seed in next week's CAA Championship. The Pride could also get the title with a draw or a loss, but that would be dependent on the results of the James Madison-Northeastern match at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
Hofstra (14-1-1, 5-1-1 CAA) is ranked.14th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, 13th by Top Drawer Soccer, and 15th by College Soccer News. The Pride is also the top-ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region Poll. Hofstra enters the game on a four-game winning streak and a 12-game unbeaten streak following a 2-0 victory at Elon last Saturday that clinched a CAA Championship berth.
Hendrik Hebbeker scored both goals for the Pride and the defense limited Elon to three shots on goal as
Wessel Speel notched his seventh shutout of the season.
Hebbeker now has 21 points on the season with six goals and nine assists, and joins
Ryan Carmichael (13 goals, 4 assists, 30 points) and
Matthew Vowinkel (7 goals, 6 assists, 20 points) to give the Pride three players with 20 or more points. Speel has a 0.62 goals against average and 47 saves in goal to go along with a .825 save percentage.
UNCW (9-6-1, 4-3-0 CAA) is fighting for one of the two remaining CAA Championship spots and likely needs a win. The Seahawks dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to William & Mary this past Saturday and are 2-3 in their last five outings. Nicolas Molina (6 goals, 1 assist) and Omar Aboutaleb (5 goals, 3 assists) lead the Seahawks with 13 points each. Jacob Evans and Michael Hornsby lead the team with seven assists.
The game will be streamed live on FloFC with audio provided by WRHU-FM (88.7). There will also be an audio only broadcast and live statistics available. Links for each can be found above or on the men's soccer schedule page on GoHofstra.com.
Following Saturday's game, Hofstra will next be in action in the CAA Semifinals at James Madison on Thursday, November 11. Opponent and game time will be determined following the completion of Saturday's games.
