MSOC: Hofstra Hosts Elon In CAA Championship Game Sunday

Hempstead, NY - The top-seeded Hofstra University men's soccer team advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship game with a 2-1 victory over Drexel in the semifinals and will take on third-seeded Elon in the finals Sunday (November 14) at 1 p.m. at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The winner will earn the CAA's automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Men's Soccer Championship.

The game will be streamed on FloFC and live statistics will be available as well. In addition, WRHU-FM will provide an audio broadcast of Hofstra contests. Links for all can be found above or on the men's soccer schedule page of GoHofstra.com.

Hofstra, ranked 13th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, enters the final with a record of 15-1-2 and is on a 14-game unbeaten streak (12-0-2). In addition, the Pride's 15 wins matches the program record established in 1968. Hofstra is making its ninth appearance in the CAA championship game and is looking for its fifth title and first since 2015.

The Pride reached the finals with a 2-1 victory over the fourth-seeded Dragons of Drexel behind a pair of goals from Matthew Vowinkel. The graduate forward opened the scoring in the first half and then snapped a 1-1 tie early in the second. Hofstra's defense held strong and Wessel Speel made five saves in goal.

Elon is 9-7-2 on the season and is coming off a 1-0 victory over the No. 2 seed, Northeastern, in the semifinals. Scott Vatne scored on a penalty kick late in the second half for the game's only goal and Peter Wentzel made six saves for the Phoenix. Elon will be making its first-ever appearance in the CAA finals.  

Hofstra is 6-0-1 all-time against Elon and 2-0-1 against the Phoenix at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Pride defeated Elon in North Carolina on Oct. 30, 2-0, behind two goals from Hendrik Hebbeker.
