MSOC: Hofstra Moves To 2-0 With Win At UMBC

Catonsville, MD - Freshman Frederik Rieper scored his first career goal and Hofstra recorded its second consecutive shutout as the Pride picked up a 1-0 road win over UMBC at Retriever Soccer Park Sunday night. The Pride moved to 2-0 on the year with the victory. UMBC slipped to 0-2. 
 
The teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half with the Pride outshooting the Retrievers, 5-4, in the opening 45 minutes. Hofstra did have the best scoring chance, a penalty kick in the 43rd minute. But the kick went high. Hofstra could have had several more chances but was whistled offsides seven times in the opening stanza.  

Hofstra broke through in the
57th minute on its sixth corner kick of the second half. Adam Savill drove the ball into the box and it was flicked on by Stefan Mason. Rieper, the 6-5 defender, got his head on it and knocked it into the back of the net.  

Hofstra keeper Alex Ashton was only called on to make one save as he recorded his second straight clean sheet. 
Quantrell Jones had two saves in goal for UMBC.  

The Pride is back in action Friday night when it opens 
Colonial Athletic Association play at defending champion James Madison. Game time in Harrisonburg, Virginia, is set for 7 p.m. 

Notes:
 
-Hofstra is 3-1 all-time versus UMBC 
-This is Hofstra's first 2-0 start since 2015 when the Pride began the year 4-0.  
-The shutout was the 16th of Alex Ashton's career, tying him with Greg Cumpstone for third on the Pride's all-time list.   
-UMBC outshot the Pride, 12-11, in the game though Hofstra had a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.  
-Hofstra had nine corner kicks and held a 53-47 percent advantage in possession.
