WLAX: Hofstra Commences CAA Action This Week

Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team will begin Colonial Athletic Association play this week after a successful non-conference portion of their schedule saw them capture seven victories. 

Hofstra will host William & Mary on Friday at 5 p.m. at James M. Shuart Stadium before closing the weekend with a road game at Elon on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Pride concluded its non-conference slate with a 13-8 win over Columbia this past Saturday as Hofstra led wire-to-wire in the victory over its local rival. Junior Alyssa Parrella posted seven points (4 G, 3 A), while sophomore Katie Whelan had five points (4 G, 1 A). Freshman Amanda Guerra tallied the first goals of her career with a hat trick to assist in the win over the Lions. 

Parrella is in the midst of another special season for the Pride as she now has 63 points on 52 goals and 11 assists. Whelan ranks second on the team with 37 points on 23 goals and 14 assists, while junior Alexa Mattera has 31 points on 26 goals and five assists. Mattera has been strong on both ends of the field as she also has 35 draw controls, 22 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. Junior Darcie Smith leads Hofstra in three different categories with 73 draw controls, 26 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers. Freshman Jess Smith has started all 11 games in net for the Pride and has a 9.92 goals against average, along with 103 saves and a .495 saves percentage. 

William & Mary is 5-4 this season and most recently dropped a 12-11 overtime decision at Coastal Carolina on March 24. Belle Martire leads the Tribe with 29 points on 25 goals and four assists. She also has 12 draw controls, 11 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Meredith Hughes is second on the team with 20 points on 17 goals and three assists. Starr Howard has 49 draw controls, 18 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers as well. 

Elon is 2-8 and fell 16-12 to High Point in its last game on March 27. They will take on Drexel on Friday before hosting the Pride. A pair of players have 20 or more points this season for the Phoenix as Mae McGlynn leads with 30 points on 28 goals and two assists and Kaley Thompson has 20 points on 15 goals and five assists. Paulina DiFatta is tops on Elon with 20 ground balls, Quinn Daly and Carleigh Goldstein each have nine caused turnovers and Thompson has a team-best 36 draw controls. 

Hofstra is 12-6 all-time against William & Mary and defeated the Tribe, 15-14, in overtime last season in Williamsburg. The Pride is 1-3 all-time against Elon and the Phoenix earned a 12-8 victory last year.
