On Parrella’s Day, Mennella Delivers Historic Performance in Hofstra Win

Hempstead, NY - On the day Hofstra Athletics and the women's lacrosse program retired the jersey of Alyssa Parrella, the Pride's Nikki Mennella reminded everyone of her greatness as well.

Mennella poured in an extraordinary 11 points on seven goals and four assists, while also adding five ground balls in Hofstra's 22-11 win over Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The 11 points tied Mennella's career high, ironically set at Monmouth last season.

In addition, the 11 points are a program record and the fourth-most points in a game in NCAA Division I this season. The seven goals are tied for the 11th-most in a game this season in Division I. The 11 points are also the fourth-most in a game in CAA history.

Hofstra got a dominant performance from Madeleine Rudolph, who tallied a career-best 13 draw controls to help the Pride to a 24-11 advantage. It is the most by a CAA player this season.

A relatively even first half saw the teams knotted at 8-8 after 30 minutes of play, as Kate Lemery scored with 47 seconds left in the second quarter to even the score at the break.

The halftime break worked perfectly for Hofstra, as the Pride came out of the locker room on fire and scored the first seven goals of the third quarter to take a 15-8 lead following a player-up goal from Charli Joyce with 7:16 remaining in the period. Mennella scored three times during the 7-0 run to power the Pride to the commanding advantage.

After a Monmouth goal, Hofstra added a 4-0 scoring run to push the lead to 19-9 after another Mennella tally. The Pride scored three of the final four goals of the contest to account for the final score.

Shea Berigan had five points on four goals and one assist for Monmouth, which got 10 saves from Katie Sullivan.

Prior to the game, Hofstra honored Parrella with the retirement of her No. 7 jersey.

A dominant offensive force from 2017 to 2021, Parrella finished as Hofstra's all-time leader in goals (261) and points (355), highlighted by a record-setting 2019 season in which she totaled 85 goals and 105 points. A CAA player of the year, rookie of the year and multiple-time All-American, Parrella's impact extended beyond scoring, as her leadership, competitiveness and ability to elevate those around her helped shape the program's modern identity and left a lasting legacy on Pride women's lacrosse.

Parrella is the second Hofstra women's lacrosse player to have her jersey number retired, joining Stephanie Clarke (No. 30).

Hofstra is back in action Friday when it travels to Stony Brook for a 6:31 p.m. contest. The game will air on FloCollege.
