MLAX: Hofstra Travels To Rutgers Saturday for Final Non-Conference Tilt

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men's Lacrosse team will wrap-up their 2019 non-conference schedule this Saturday, March 23 when the Pride travel to Piscataway, New Jersey to face the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers at HighPoint.com Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.

Hofstra has wins over Lehigh (4-3), Utah (14-10), and St. John's (9-7), and losses to nationally-ranked Villanova (10-9 in OT), Georgetown (14-6), Ohio State (14-8) as well as Stony Brook (11-10) and Providence (11-10).
 
The Pride is coming off an 11-10 loss to Providence at James M. Shuart Stadium last Saturday. The Pride spotted the Friars five goals to open the contest before rallying in the second half. After tying the game at 8-8, the Pride took a 9-8 lead on a goal by senior Jimmy Yanes. PC answered with back-to-back goals to regain the lead at 10-9 but Pride freshman Sterlyn Ardrey scored his third goal of the game to knot the contest at 10-10. Providence's Dan Axelson then tallied his fourth goal of the game with just under six minutes to play and Hofstra could not get the equalizer as the Pride dropped their third one-goal decision of the season.

In addition to Ardrey's three goals, Hofstra received two goals and one assist from Jimmy Yanes and a goal and two assists by junior Ryan Tierney. Sophomore goalie Bobby Casey made 12 saves in the Pride goal.

The Pride is led in scoring by Ryan Tierney with 19 goals and six assists while classmate Ryan Kinnard now has eight goals and one assist. Yanes has four goals and five assists and freshman Whit Stopak, who has not played in the last two contests due to injury, also has eight goals. Sophomore Riley Forte has five goals and three assists while freshman Matt Elder has tallied two goals and five assists.  Sophomore goalie Bobby Casey has a 9.97 goals against average with 86 saves and a .518 save percentage.

The Scarlet Knights of Rutgers are 4-4 on the season with wins over Lafayette (14-8), St. John's (19-15), Fairfield (8-4) and Princeton (9-8) and losses to Army (10-9), Loyola (13-7), Lehigh (13-10) and, most recently, Syracuse (18-14) last Saturday. The Scarlet Knights average 11.25 goals per game and allow 11.12 per outing.
 
Rutgers is led by junior Kieran Mullins with 16 goals and a team-high 16 assists in six games. Sophomore Adam Charalambides has tallied a team-high 23 goals and eight assists while classmate Ryan Gallagher has posted eight goals and seven assists. Senior Max Edelman has recorded an 11.00 goals against average with 94 saves and a .587 save percentage in six games this season. Freshman Ben Pounds has an 11.50 goals against average with 23 saves and a .500 save percentage in two games in 2019.
 
Hofstra and Rutgers will be meeting for the 30th time on Saturday in a series that began in 1955. The Scarlet Knights hold a 15-14 series lead. The two programs have not met since 1999 when the Pride topped the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, 15-6. The last Rutgers victory over Hofstra came in the 1995 regular season finale at Rutgers, 14-11.
 
After the Rutgers game, Hofstra will begin Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday, March 30 at Johnny Unitas Stadium against the Tigers of Towson. Game time is 12 p.m.
