MSOC: Hofstra Opens CAA Championship Play Versus Delaware Friday

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University men's soccer team opens play at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Friday with a quarterfinal matchup against Delaware. The third-seeded Pride will kickoff against the sixth-seed Blue Hens at 1 p.m. at James Madison's Sentara Park.

Hofstra is making its 12th appearance in the CAA Championship and its eighth in a row. The Pride is 10-7-4 all-time in CAA Championship play. Hofstra won titles in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2015.

Hofstra earned the three seed after a 9-6-2 regular season that included a 5-2-1 mark in the CAA. Matthew Vowinkel led the Pride in scoring for the second consecutive season, tallying a career-best 12 goals and two assists for 26 points. Petter Soelberg had six goals and two assists for 14 points, while Storm Strongin chipped in three goals and a team-high six assists for 12 points. The Pride saw nine players score goals and 15 players record at least one assist. Hofstra's defense was anchored by George O'Malley and Frederik Rieper in front of keeper Alex Ashton, who had a 1.30 goals against average and 47 saves.

Delaware is 3-8-3 on the seasons and was 2-4-2 in the CAA. Timo Hummrich leads the Blue Hens with six goals and an assist for 13 points, while keeper Renan Thomazo has a 2.53 goals against average and 61 saves.

Hofstra defeated Delaware, 5-0, on October 26 behind three goals from Vowinkel, a goal and an assist from Storm Stongin and a goal from Rieper. Hofstra dominated all aspects of the game, outshooting the Blue Hens, 18-4. The Pride had 14 shots on goal while Delaware did not have one. The Pride also had 12 corner kicks compared to none for Delaware.

The winner of Friday's quarterfinal matchup advances to face second-seeded James Madison on Sunday at 3 p.m.
