After three consecutive home victories this season, the Pride suffered their first defeat at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium last Sunday against the Bulldogs of Yale, 5-2. This followed the Pride's 4-2 victory over the Bobcats of Quinnipiac less than 24 hours earlier.
In the win over Quinnipiac, Hofstra jumped out to a 3-0 lead just 27 seconds into the second half on goals by freshman
Hannah Zemaitis and junior
Madison Sauve in the first half and freshman
Philine de Wolf just after the start of the second stanza. But the Bobcats struck twice just five minutes apart to make the half interesting before Sauve notched her second of the game and fifth of the year with less than seven minutes to play to seal the victory. Hofstra graduate-student
Marloes Schavemaker assisted on three of the four Pride goals to tie the school record, equaled several times the last time by
Claudia Marin Samper against Colgate in 2015.
On 21 hours of rest on Sunday, the Pride came out sluggish and trailed Yale, 3-0 after just 19:39. Hofstra sophomore
Alyssa Kohler put the Pride on the board with her first career goal before Yale added another for a 4-1 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs outshot the Pride, 15-3 in the first 35 minutes with Hofstra senior goalie
Carys Swan making five saves. The Pride seemed to get their wind in the second half, outshooting Yale, 11-5, but could only put one in the goal on a penalty stroke by freshman
Frankie O'Brien before the Bulldogs added a late goal for the 5-2 final score.
Hofstra is led in scoring by Sauve with five goals and one assist for 11 points while de Wolf is second with four goals and one assist for nine points. O'Brien has added two goals and one assist and Schavemaker has a team-high five assists on the year. Swan has posted a 2.77 goals against average and a .695 save percentage in seven games.
The Lions of Columbia are 1-3 on the season and are coming off their first win of the season, a 4-3 overtime victory over the Stags of Fairfield. The Pride dropped a 2-0 decision at Fairfield on September 1. Friday's contest will be the 20
th meeting between Hofstra and Columbia with the Pride holding an 11-8 series advantage. The two teams last played in 2015 in upper Manhattan with Hofstra posting a 4-3 victory. The Pride have won the last two games in the series.
The Pioneers of Sacred Heart are 2-4 on the year and have dropped the last two contests after splitting the first four. Yale is the only common opponent of the Pride and Pioneers with the Bulldogs defeating Sacred Heart, 6-2 on September 2. Sunday's game is the 15
th meeting between Hofstra and the Pioneers with the Pride undefeated and untied in the series.
