Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra Men's Soccer Head Coach
Richard Nuttall has announced the addition of six more newcomers for the 2017 season, who will join freshmen Matthew Vowinkel, Andrea Codispoti and Storm Strongin.
"We've got a great group coming in," said Nuttall. "They bring a diverse slate of talent and experience, and we expect them to compete for time right away."
The group of six newcomers includes three transfers and three true freshmen, representing six countries.
Hampus Agerstrom, a senior transfer, comes to Hofstra from Kentucky, joining fellow former Wildcat
Nick Bigilin. In three seasons with Kentucky, the 5-foot-9 central midfielder appeared in 52 games, starting 33. He posted two goals and an assist as a sophomore after setting up the game-winning goal against then-No. 1 and defending NCAA Champion Notre Dame as a freshman. A native of Helsingborg, Sweden, Agerstrom played at Filborna Skolan, while also competing with Helsingborg IF at the club level and playing senior Division 2 with Helsingborg Akademi.
Junior transfer Marcus Lindqvist played his first two seasons for neighboring St. John's. He played club soccer for Stabaek Football in Norway, helping the team to a state championship and a junior premiere championship. He also spent time with Holmen, where he was a two-time Player of the Year. Nuttall mentioned that Lindqvist plays a modern style, able to join the attack from the back.
A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, junior transfer Gustavo Nascimento spent his first two seasons at Iowa Lakes Community College. A 6-foot midfielder, He played 30 games and made 27 starts in the midfield, posting six goals and nine assists, earning first-team all-region honors as a sophomore.
Jack Nuttall, son of Head Coach
Richard Nuttall and New Hyde Park native, joins his former Chaminade High School teammates, Vowinkel and Codispoti, on the Pride. The 6-1 central midfielder was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-State Team after finishing his senior season with two goals and 15 assists. He was also an All-Catholic League, Newsday All-Long Island and News 12 Varsity Senior All-Long Island first-team selection, while earning second-team All-Tri-State honors. Richard noted his son's ability to win tackles and headers and communicate effectively on the field.
Hailing from Barcelona, Spain, Marc Rodriguez brings the impressive pedigree of Spanish soccer to Hofstra's freshman class. Rodriguez worked his way up the CE Europa Preferente ranks, spending his final two seasons as the captain of the U19 squad. In 2013, the 5-9 defender led the side to a league championship and was selected to play for the Catalan Selection Football team in Barcelona. Nuttall noted that Rodriguez has "a great soccer IQ" and hopes Rodriguez will be able to contribute from the start.
George O'Malley, a 5-11 native of Pinner, England, rounds out the Pride's freshman class. Able to play various roles in the midfield, O'Malley helped the Harrow School to a league championship in 2016 and captained the team to its best ever result in the national Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) Cup in 2017. He captained both the England ISFA and England Schoolboys national teams, leading the latter to victory in the Centenary Shield in 2016. Nuttall notes that O'Malley "brings a lot of bite and drive" as an "engine-room type player."
After taking home the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title in 2016, the Pride opens the 2017 campaign at Penn State on Aug. 25.
