Matton's PK In Final Seconds Lifts Hofstra

Queens, NY - Lewis Matton's penalty kick goal with 24 seconds remaining in the second half gave No. 16 Hofstra a thrilling 2-1 victory over St. John's Tuesday night at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm had knotted the score 15 seconds earlier.

The Pride moved to 3-0-1 on the season with the win, while St. John's dropped to 1-2-0.

Hofstra took the initial lead at 35:10 when Sean Keane headed in a Jack Benham corner kick. The score remained that way until the final minute when the Red Storm broke through on a goal from Luca Fargnoli with 39 seconds remaining.

The Pride, which was coming off a tie at Stony Brook this past Saturday, was not going to settle for a draw and forced the action off the kickoff. Bastian Carlman drew a foul in the box, which was confirmed by VAR technology, to set up Matton's winner. The fifth-year forward sent a low shot inside the right post for his first goal of the season. The Red Storm got the ball into the offensive end in the final seconds but could not get off a shot.

Hofstra returns home Saturday night for a 7 p.m. CAA matchup with Drexel at Captains Field.

Notes:
-Milo Risenhoover made two saves in goal for the Pride.
-The Red Storm held a 15-8 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
-Hofstra is 5-10-2 all-time against St. John's.
-Keane's goal was his third of the season, while Benham notched his second assist.
-The game was delayed for 1:33 due to lightning.
