Hempstead, NY – The second-ranked Hofstra Men's Lacrosse team (10-0, 2-0 CAA) will be looking to extend their undefeated streak this Saturday, April 15 when the Pride return home for the first time in three weeks to face the Dragons of Drexel University at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time for this Colonial Athletic Association match-up is 7 p.m.
Pride Productions will provide free live video and audio streaming of the contest. In addition, Hofstra will also provide live statistics. Hofstra, which is ranked in the Top 10 in all three weekly polls for the fourth consecutive week, equaled its best ranking ever in the Division I weekly polls when the Pride climbed to second in both the USILA/Nike Coaches Poll and the Maverik/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll this week. The rankings equal those achieved at the end of the 2006 regular season when the Pride was 16-1.
Last Saturday, Hofstra continued their winning streak and improved its CAA record to 2-0 on the season with an 11-9 victory at Delaware. The Pride jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter and fought off a late UD rally to improve to 10-0 on the year. Senior
Josh Byrne posted his eighth multi-goal game and his sixth game with three goals or more with four goals and one assist. Sophomore
Jimmy Yanes equaled his season-highs with three goals, one assist and four points. Junior
Alex Moeser recorded his sixth multi-goal game with two goals and one assist and freshman
Ryan Tierney added a goal and two assists for his eighth contest with three points or more. Junior goalie
Jack Concannon made nine saves for his 10
th win of the season and the 19
th of his career.
This season, Hofstra has wins over Monmouth (11-9), Princeton (10-8), NJIT (20-4), Georgetown (11-9), North Carolina (11-9), Providence (11-10), Stony Brook (11-9), St. John's (9-6), Fairfield (10-6) and Delaware (11-9). Five of the 10 Pride victories have been by final11-9 scores. Hofstra averages 11.50 goals per game and allow 7.90 goals per game which ranks eighth in the country. Hofstra is also making the most of their extra-man opportunities, connecting on 15 of 34 man-up chances for a .441 success rate, which ranks 15th in the nation.
On the season, Byrne now has 29 goals and a career-high 21 assists in 10 games giving him 95 points since his arrival at Hofstra for the 2016 season. Tierney has added 20 goals and 13 assists while junior
Dylan Alderman has career-highs of 10 goals, 14 assists and 24 points. Moeser now has career-highs of 14 goals, six assists and 20 points while classmate
Brendan Kavanagh has scored a career-high 15 goals. Concannon has a 7.90 goals against average with 123 saves and a .615 save percentage.
Drexel and the Pride will be meeting for the 31st time but just the fourth time for the HEADstrong Foundation's Hero Bowl between the two programs. Hofstra leads the series, 23-7 but Drexel has won four of the last six meetings. The Pride won the last encounter, 10-4 in Philadelphia in 2016. Hofstra also holds a 2-1 advantage in the Hero Bowl battle in honor of the late HEADstrong Foundation founder and Hofstra Men's Lacrosse player, Nicholas Colleluori
The Dragons of Drexel enter Saturday's CAA contest with a 4-6 overall record and a 1-1 slate in the CAA after their 13-12 victory over Fairfield last Saturday. Drexel, which opened the season with four consecutive losses, has wins over Bryant (7-5), Saint Joseph's (12-8), St. John's (9-7) and Fairfield (13-12). Their losses have come against Virginia (18-14), Albany (19-8), Villanova (15-13), Marist (11-7), Providence (9-8 in OT) and Towson (8-7).
The Dragons average 9.80 goals per game and allow 11.20 per outing.
Drexel is led in scoring by senior Cole Shafer with 24 goals and four assists. Freshman Reid Bowering has added 17 goals and 10 assists while senior Robert Frazee has contributed 17 goals and four assists. Senior goalie Jimmy Joe Granito has recorded an 11.18 goals against average with 118 saves and a .513 save percentage.
Hofstra will have two special presentations in pregame and halftime ceremonies. Before the game the Pride will honor former Hofstra standout
Sam Llinares on a great career that ended in 2016. Llinares finished his four-year career ninth in career goals (101), fourth in assists (80) and sixth in points (181). He was a three-time All-CAA selection and was the CAA Player of the Year in 2015. At halftime, Hofstra will honor long-time lacrosse official and former Pride golf coach Robert Schwalb on receiving the USILA Frenchy Julien Service Award for long and dedicated service to the game of lacrosse.
After the Drexel contest, the Pride will wrap up their regular season home schedule on Saturday, April 22 against the Minutemen of Massachusetts. Game time at Shuart Stadium for the Senior Day match-up is 1 p.m.
