Hempstead, N.Y. -- Coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2015, Hofstra men's soccer received votes in the
National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) Preseason Top 25 Poll that was released Tuesday afternoon.
The Pride finished last season 14-8, tying a Division I program record for wins in a season, and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, earning an automatic bid by taking home the Colonial Athletic Association championship. Hofstra advanced to the second round of the Tournament after defeating Lehigh, 2-1, in a dramatic overtime game. The Pride ranked as high as No. 14 in the NSCAA poll last season and received votes in the final poll of 2015.
After the Pride tied for the CAA regular season championship, Head Coach
Richard Nuttall was recognized as the 2015 CAA Coach of the Year while
Joseph Holland earned Player of the Year honors from the conference. Leading the team with eight goals and nine assists, Holland was also named an NSCAA Second-Team All-American and a first-team All-Midwest Region selection.
Hofstra earned two votes in this season's first iteration of the NSCAA poll. Defending national champion Stanford earned the No. 1 ranking. Five teams on the Pride's 2016 schedule were also ranked in the Top 25: Maryland (No. 4), Syracuse (No. 6), Boston College (No. 11), Virginia (No. 17) and Charlotte (No. 22). Hofstra opponents Elon and Harvard also received votes.
The Pride opens its 2016 campaign at Stony Brook at 7 p.m. on Aug. 26. Hofstra will host Army West Point in the home opener at 5 p.m. on Sept. 10.
