Hofstra (9-4, 3-1), Towson (11-2, 3-1) and Fairfield (7-7, 3-1) are currently in a three-way tie for the top spot in the CAA heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The number one seed gets the right to host the 2016 CAA Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament that begins on Thursday, May 5 with semifinal games and wraps up with the title game on Saturday, May 7.
Six scenarios-one less than last year's final weekend-will decide the top four spots for the CAA Championship of which the Pride is guaranteed a spot. But Hofstra could finish in any of the four places. For Hofstra to capture the number one seed, the Pride will first need Delaware (5-9, 2-2) to defeat Fairfield Friday night in Newark, DE and then defeat Towson on Saturday. A Fairfield victory-even if Hofstra is victorious on Saturday-will give the Stags the number seed based on their 9-8 win over the Pride on April 2. Fairfield could be bumped from the top spot even with a victory if Towson defeats Hofstra based on the Tigers' 18-11 win over the Stags last weekend.
While teams will be battling for the number one seed, Drexel (5-8, 1-3) and Delaware (5-9, 2-2) will be battling for the final spot in the CAA Tournament. The Dragons climbed back into the playoff picture with a 6-5 overtime victory over Delaware last Saturday. Drexel will host UMass (4-8, 0-4) in Philadelphia Friday evening. Nonetheless, the Pride will know by 9:30 p.m. Friday night what is on the line for them on Saturday.
Hofstra, which has won five of their last six outings, is coming off a 10-9 overtime victory at UMass last Saturday. Sophomore
Brendan Kavanagh scored the game-winner with just 14 seconds to play in the first extra period. Kavanagh also assisted on the Pride's previous two goals in the fourth quarter including senior
Sam Llinares' 100th career goal that gave the Hofstra a 9-8 lead with under four minutes to play. UMass' Buddy Carr sent the game into overtime with his 18th goal of the year with 14 seconds remaining in regulation time.
In addition to Kavanagh's heroics, Llinares tallied two goals and one assist as did sophomore
Dylan Alderman. Junior
Josh Byrne added two goals and sophomore goalie
Jack Concannon made 12 saves to record double-digit saves for the eighth time this season.
This season, Hofstra has victories over North Carolina (10-5), Princeton (11-10 in OT), NJIT (19-4), Ohio State (8-5), Vermont (13-12 in OT), St. John's (15-8), Delaware (13-7), Drexel (10-4) and UMass (10-9 in OT). The Pride losses have come against Georgetown (11-6), Stony Brook (13-5), Providence (12-7) and Fairfield (9-8). Hofstra averages 10.38 goals per game and allows 8.38 per outing.
