ATH: Hofstra Holds Annual Academic Recognition Ceremony

Hempstead, NY - During halftime of Sunday's men's basketball win over Northeastern, Hofstra Athletics honored 299 Hofstra University student-athletes and spirit support members for their academic achievements during the fall and spring semesters, including 29 who earned a perfect 4.0. During the Fall 2015 semester 209 student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher GPA, a record number for an individual semester.

"We are incredibly proud of the work that the students in our athletic program along with the spirit support students continue to do in the classroom," commented Hofstra Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. "Sunday's men's basketball game was certainly a wonderful occasion to recognize these students so that the entire Hofstra community could celebrate their outstanding academic achievements. Everyone on the Hofstra campus should share in the pride and appreciation we have for these students."

Hofstra's 29 4.0 student-athletes and spirit support personnel were as follows:

From field hockey, a junior majoring in marketing, Emily Gallagher; a junior majoring in public relations, Gillian Kirkpatrick; a junior majoring in international business, Claudia Marin Samper; and a junior majoring in international business, Stella Schoen

From men's cross country, a sophomore majoring in biology, Alan Hetherington; and a sophomore majoring in accounting, Austin Jenkins

From men's lacrosse, a junior majoring in management, Kris Clarke

From men's soccer, a sophomore majoring in business, Henry Crayton; a senior majoring in finance, Daniel Grundei; and a junior majoring in marketing, Rory Murphy

From women's cross country, a junior majoring in speech-language hearing sciences, with a double minor in neuroscience and global studies, Capri Pappalardo; and a junior majoring in early childhood education, Amanda Sullivan

From women's golf, a junior majoring in international business, Victoria Snak

A two-sport student-athlete from women's lacrosse and women's soccer, a sophomore majoring in civil engineering, Carolyn Carrera

From women's soccer, a freshman majoring in biochemistry, Jenn Buoncore; a sophomore majoring in psychology, Rhian Cleverly; a senior majoring in public relations, Chloe Dale; a junior majoring in international business, Friederike Mehring; and a junior majoring in exercise science, Maria Pettet

From pep band, a sophomore majoring in physics, Alexandre Dangay; a sophomore majoring in public relations, with a double minor in French and drama, Danielle Drop; and a senior majoring in psychology with a minor in neuroscience Russell Vogel

We are also proud to announce that the 2014-15 academic year saw Hofstra student-athletes compile a record 3.24 average grade point average for the entire year. The volleyball team had the highest grade point average among all Hofstra varsity teams with a 3.59 GPA.

Hofstra Athletics would like to thank our Academic Advisement Staff – Associate Dean of University Advising Rachel Peel-Macandrew and Assistant Dean of University Advising Michelle Spaterella – for their efforts in helping Pride student-athletes succeed in the classroom.
