WREST: Hofstra Tops Davidson For A Split At The Pitt Duals

Pittsburgh, PA -  Hofstra recorded bonus points in seven of their eight victories, including three pins, to down Davidson, 41-10 and earn a split at the Pittsburgh Duals at Fitzgerald Field House Saturday afternoon. The Pride dropped a 35-9 decision to third-ranked North Carolina State in their first round match. Hofstra is now 3-6 on the season.

Three Hofstra wrestlers, redshirt junior Jamel Hudson at 141, junior Frank Affronti at 174 and sophomore Cory Damiana at 184, posted double victories on the day. Hudson and Affronti each had tech falls to go with a win by decision while Damiana had two wins by decision.

In the first match of the day, the third-ranked Wolfpack captured seven of the ten weight classes to improve to 13-0 on the season. North Carolina State won the first two matches before Hudson put the Pride on the board with a 10-8 victory over Will Clark at 141. The Wolfpack won the next three matches, including a fall and a tech fall, to boost their lead to 25-3. Affronti and Damiana posted consecutive wins by decision to close to 25-9. Affronti blanked Lee Davis, 3-0 at 174 and Damiana defeated Roderick Davis, 8-3 at 184. But the Wolfpack closed with a forfeit win at 197 and top-ranked Nick Gwiazdowski majored Michael Hughes, 12-4 at 285 to close out the match.

In Hofstra's second match of the Pitt Duals against Davidson, sophomore Bryan Damon (12-16) opened with a 12-1 major decision over Zamir Ode at at 125. After Dustin Runzo tied the match for the Wildcats with a major decision at 133, Hofstra captured the next six weight classes to open up a 35-4 lead.

Hudson (12-3) opened the run with a 16-0 tech fall win at 141. It was his first tech fall of the year. Sophomore Kyle Krasavage (7-2) recorded his third pin of the season, over Aidan Conroy, at the 1:30 mark of their 149-lb. contest. Junior Jahlani Callender (11-11) recorded his first fall of the year with a pin of Tien Hunter in 2:51 at 157. Redshirt freshman Bobby Fehr (3-12) won by forfeit at 165 and Affronti (23-8) notched his team-leading third tech fall of the season with a 15-0 win over JC Burton at 174. Damiana (12-12) won his fourth consecutive match with a 5-0 decision over Konner Pritchard at 184.

The Pride forfeited the 197-lb match before junior Michael Hughes (22-6) closed out the contest with his seventh fall of the year, pinning Will Cooley in 1:43 at 285.

Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, January 16 when they travel to Army West Point for a 3 p.m. match.
