Becky Celorio placed third and newcomers
Felicia Banda and
Angelica Peck each placed in the top 14 to lead the Hofstra Women's Cross Country team to a 3-1 record in the season opening 5K Marist College Quad Meet at Vassar Farm Saturday morning.
Celorio, a native of Scotia, NY, posted a personal-best time of 18:31.6 to finish two seconds behind second-place Mara Schiffhauer and champion Kristen Traub, both from Marist, in the meet. It was the 20th time in 21 meets that Celorio has led the Pride team. She topped her previous best time of 18:35 at the 2013 Towson Invitational.
Freshman
Felicia Banda (Westminister, MA) was Hofstra's second finisher, clocking a time of 19:30.6 to place 11th in her first collegiate meet. Graduate-student
Angelica Peck, who ran three seasons for the Orange of Syracuse, placed 14th in 19:47.7.
Sophomore
Emily McLean (Jaffrey, NH) recorded a 5K personal best of 20:04.8 to place 21st. She topped her previous best time of 20:26 set at the LIU Post Invitational last season. Freshman
Alli Bacher (Plainsboro, NJ) rounded out the scoring runners with a 32nd-place overall finish in 20:55.
Freshman
Mahlah Givehand (Old Saybrook, CT) posted a time of 20:56.4 to finish 33rd while sophomore
Irene Garidas (Holmdel, NJ) grabbed the seventh spot for Hofstra, posting a time of 21:05 for 37th place.
Four more Pride student-athletes competed in the season-opening meet. Junior
Amanda Sullivan (Pomona, CA) placed 39th in 21:25, sophomore
Megan Tidey (Forest Hill, MD) was 45th in 21:54, freshman
Marissa Cadieux (Ellington, CT) was 54th in 23:19, and classmate
Jamie Kanner (Bellmore, NY) was 57th in 30:02.
The meet was won by the host Red Foxes of Marist, who placed all five of their scoring runners in the top seven and finished with 20 points. Hofstra placed second with 60 points while Iona was third with 78 points. Fairfield was fourth with 96 points and Siena was fifth with 121 points.
Hofstra returns to action on September 26 at the University of Virginia Panorama Farms Invitational in Earlysville, Virginia. Race time is set for 10 a.m.
