MSOC: Hofstra To Host Binghamton On Tuesday Night

9/29/2014 2:46:00 PM

Hempstead, N.Y. – After a stretch of seven-of-eight games on the road, the Pride will return home to host Binghamton on Tuesday at 7 p.m. from Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Pride Productions will offer free live video, which can be accessed via PRIDE ZONE (as well as free live audio). To purchase tickets, please call the Hofstra Athletics Ticket Office at (516) HOF-TIXX.

Hofstra will be playing its first game in more than a week and will look to build off a 3-3-2 and start and start Colonial Athletic Association play with momentum when the Pride opens league action at Elon on Oct. 4. Binghamton lost six of the season's first eight games and is 2-7 after a 2-0 loss to Princeton. Binghamton has played well against the best competition on its schedule, dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 18 Syracuse on Sept. 23.

Hofstra has also played teams associated with the NSCAA national rankings. The Pride blanked Vermont, 1-0, in Burlington in the last game. The Catamounts entered the contest receiving votes in the latest national poll, but senior defender Daniel Grundei scored the game's only goal and goalkeeperrs Patric Pray and Brian McPartland combined on the shutout.

Grundei has two goals this season in addition to logging the vast majority of minutes as a center back. After transferring from former rival Towson when the Tigers discontinued its soccer program, Grundei earned tri-captain status at Hofstra along with fellow seniors Maid Memic and Elliott Firth. All members of the trio scored two goals, joining them with sophomore Joseph Holland for a share of the team lead.

Holland, a midfielder, has been Hofstra's best playmaker this season and is on a six-game streak with at least one point. Holland has six assists and has compiled 10 points, all in the last six games.

Firth had scored two goals in his first 23 games but matched that total in less than a 21-minute stretch when he scored two goals at UNH on Sept. 19. Firth scored in the 68th and 88th minutes and had a shot-on-goal in the 90th minute. The Sheffield, England native has played in all eight games with seven starts. Memic has been a beneficiary of Holland and Firth's midfield play and has two goals and an assist on a team-high 21 shots.

Hofstra won the only previous meeting between the schools. A 3-2 road win in 2012 was the first time the Pride played the Bearcats. Holland scored in that game and Tyler Botte notched a two-goal game. Memic logged 85 minutes in that contest.

The current meeting will see Binghamton travel to Hofstra for the first time. The Bearcats lost six of the season's first eight games and entered Sept. 27 with just six goals for a 0.75 goals-per-game average. At 7.6 shots-per-game, the Bearcats will look to generate more offense. Alex Varkatzas is the only Binghamton player with multiple goals as he carried a two-goal, six-shot stat line into the previous weekend.

In goal, Stefan Frantellizzi and Robert Moews have split time. Both goalkeepers have earned a win for Binghamton this season with one combined shutout. Hofstra has also been giving two goalkeepers playing time recently. Pray has started seven of the right games and is 2-2-2 while McPartland is 1-1. Pray played all 110 minutes in Hofstra's scoreless draw versus Northern Illinois on Opening Day and the duo both played more than 40 minutes in a combined clean sheet in the win over Vermont.
