BB: Hofstra Falls Short In Pitcher's Duel

5/11/2014 6:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Charleston broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the top of the seventh inning as the Cougars won a pitcher's duel Sunday, 2-1, to take the series from Hofstra at University Field.

College of Charleston improved to 35-16, 13-5 in the CAA. The Cougars also locked up a first round bye in the CAA Championship as can be no worse than the two seed.

Hofstra, which needs to wait until the completion of league play next weekend to find out its CAA Tournament fate, is 19-23 on the season. The Pride finished CAA play with a 7-11 record.

The Pride scored their lone run in the first inning as Kenny Jackson hit a two-out triple that was lost in the sun by Charleston right fielder Brandon Glazer. Brad Witkowski followed with a grounder to third that was misplayed for an error that allowed Jackson to score.

But Charleston freshman starter Tyler Thornton (5-4) held the Pride in check the rest of the way, allowing three hits and striking out seven in 8 1/3 innings of work. Michael Hanzlik pitched out of a second and third situation in the ninth to record his 12th save of the season.

Brian MacDonald kept Charleston in check in his best start of the season. The junior, who also serves as Hofstra's first baseman, allowed four hits and one run over six innings. The Cougars would tie the game in the third as Alex Pastorius doubled to lead off the inning and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. MacDonald then walked the next three batters, including Carl Wise to force in the tying run. But he was able to strand three runners on base to escape further damage.

Charleston went ahead in the seventh, scoring a run off reliever John Schilt (1-1). Blake Butler singled with one out and Ben Boykin followed with an RBI double for the go-ahead run.

Schilt went 1 2/3 innings, allowing the run on two hits with two strikeouts.

Hofstra threatened in the ninth as Jackson collected his third hit of the day, a single off of Hanzlik. After a strikeout for the second out, TJ Ehrsam was hit by a pitch. The runners then moved up on a wild pitch before Hanzlik got an infield pop out to end the game.

Hofstra had four hits on the day, three by Jackson and one from Matt Ford.

The Pride concludes the regular season Friday and Saturday when they host Massachusetts-Lowell in a non-conference matchup.
