Hempstead, NY - James Madison starter Chris Huffman threw a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits as James Madison evened its Colonial Athletic Association series with an 8-3 win Saturday afternoon at University Field. Hofstra had won game one, 5-2.
The Dukes improved to 10-17 overall and 2-2 in the CAA with the win. Hofstra slips to 10-10, 1-1 in the CAA with the loss, snapping a three-game winning streak.
The Dukes put up three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead off Pride starter Dave Jesch (2-1). The junior walked two batters before allowing a RBI single to Conner Brown. Matt Tenaglia followed with an RBI single of his own for a 2-0 lead. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Jesch was called for a balk, forcing in the third run.
The Dukes would take a 5-0 lead in the seventh on Ty McFarland's eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center.
The Pride got on the board in the bottom of the inning as David Leiderman singled home Kenny Jackson, who had singled and stole second. But the Dukes got the run back in the eighth with Bobby San Martin leading off with a double and scoring on Kyle Weston's single to make it a 6-1 game.
Hofstra cut the deficit to two, 6-3, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth as Ryan Donovan and Matt Ford had RBI groundouts. But the Dukes answered back with a pair of runs of their own and Hofstra did not threaten in the ninth.
Huffman (4-3) threw 120 pitches in the complete game win and struck out seven with just one walk. He kept Hofstra's leadoff hitter from getting on base in eight of his nine innings and allowed just one extra base hit, a leadoff double by TJ Ehrsam in the eighth.
Jesch allowed five hits and three runs in his five innings of work. He walked four and struck out six.
Leiderman was the only Pride player to record more than one hit as he went 2-4 with an RBI. McFarland, Tenaglia and San Martin each had a pair of hits for James Madison.
