Hempstead, NY – Chad Martin pitched a complete game seven-hitter, holding Hofstra scoreless until the ninth inning as Delaware posted a 9-1 win over the Pride to win the Colonial Athletic Association series at University Field.
The Blue Hens improved to 17-19 on the season, 5-6 in the CAA with their second straight win. Hofstra fell to 15-15 overall and 4-5 in league play.
Delaware got on the board in the fourth as Zach Lopes drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Jake Clark singled up the middle to drive in Lopes and went all the way to third on an error. Hofstra starter Dave Jesch pitched out of the jam without any further damage.
But Delaware pushed another run across in the fifth as Ty Warrington led off with a double, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on EJ Stoltzfus' single. The Blue Hens extended to a 3-0 lead with another run in the seventh as Joe Giacchino reached on an infield hit and scored on Stoltzfus' double.
Delaware would break the game open in the ninth, scoring six times. Warrington had a two-run double in the inning.
Martin (4-3) walked just one and struck out two. He allowed a leadoff double to Matt Ford in the ninth. Ford would move to third on a fly out and score on a wild pitch. The run snapped a 17-inning scoreless streak for the Pride.
Jesch (3-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Ford had two of Hofstra's seven hits, as did Eric Ferguson.
The Pride return to action Wednesday at LIU Brooklyn. Game time is 3 p.m.
