Hempstead, NY – Junior
Jonel Boileau recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 3-1 non-conference victory over the Sacred Heart Pioneers at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Pride snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 2-3 on the season. Sacred Heart dropped its second consecutive contest and is now 2-2 on the year.
After a 25-minute pregame delay due to a game official who was stuck in U.S. Open traffic, the Pioneers jumped on the scoreboard first as sophomore Rachel Claroni notched her first goal of the year, off a penalty corner insertion by classmate Christine Mace, from near the top of the circle just 6:11 into the game.
Hofstra put the pressure on the Sacred Heart-outshooting the Pioneers, 15-4 in the first half-and tied the contest on a penalty stroke by junior
Holly Andrews (Afton, NY), after a stick infraction in the goalmouth, at the 28:58 mark. It was Andrews' first goal of the season.
Freshman
Claudia Marin Samper (Terrassa, Spain) gave the Pride a 2-1 advantage with her first collegiate goal, on a perfect pass across the goal by Boileau (Kelowna, BC), just 2:49 into the second half. Boileau, Hofstra's leading scorer in 2012, then put a little space between the Pride and Pioneers, dribbling around a defender outside the circle and dribbling in one-on-one and beating SHU goalkeeper Mary Altepeter (eight saves) at the 43:59 mark. It was Boileau's third goal of the season.
Hofstra outshot the Pioneers, 12-1 in the second half and 27-5 for the game. Pride senior
Kaitlyn De Turo made three saves to record her second win of the season. Hofstra took seven penalty corners to Sacred Heart's three.
The Pride return to action on Friday, September 13 when they host the Broncs of Rider University in a non-conference game at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 4 p.m.
