Hempstead, N.Y. – Junior Sam Scolarici notched her first career hat trick, scoring the equalizer in the 87th minute and netting an unassisted goal 3:04 into overtime to lift Hofstra to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the College of Charleston Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Scolarici registered her first career three-goal game and now has a Colonial Athletic Association-leading 13 goals on the season. Senior Tara Kerns and sophomore Jeannine Molleda picked up assists as Hofstra improved its winning streak to seven in moving to 8-3 and 2-0 in CAA play. Francesca Kentimenos and Sarah Caradmone each scored less than four minutes apart in the second half, but CofC still fell to 2-8 and 0-2.
Down 2-1 in the final five minutes, Hofstra worked the ball in deep but Cougars keeper Taylor Avery played well in making eight saves. Molleda gave the Pride the break it needed with a great outlet pass to spring Scolarici, who raced in down the right side before beating Avery with a shot to the right corner at 86:01.
In overtime, Scolarici took advantage of a deep ball that Avery did not field cleanly in the box. The Aldie, Va. native collected the loose ball in the far right side and shot it into the open net for the game-winner. Scolairci's single season total is tied for fourth-most in team history. Only the 14 goals scored by Brooke DeRosa and Suzanne Newell and the team record 17 goals set by Carlene Wawrzonek in 1994 are higher on the team's single season list.
Hofstra improved to 5-1 at home in out-shooting CofC, 19-10. Senior keeper Emily Morphitis made two saves, with both stops coming in the second half, as the Pride won their first-ever CAA contest against the Cougars.
Kerns set up Scolarici's first goal in the 20th minute by sending a cross in. Scolarici gained possession at the top of the box and fired a hard shot for her 11th goal in 11 games. Hofstra built a 9-1 edge in shots in the opening half, but CofC came out strong in the second half with goals in the 56th and 60th minutes.
Kentimenos, who came off the bench, beat Morphitis with a shot to the upper-right corner and Caradmone put the Cougars ahead by racing from midfield, moving past Hofstra defenders and scoring her first of the season at 59:34.
Scolarici ensured Hofstra would not be left without points when she scored twice to set a new season high in goals. She now has 28 career scoring strikes, which ties her with Salma Tarik for the third-most in program history. Suzanne Newell (1994-97) is second on the list with 36.
Hofstra will next be in action on Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Pride starts a four-game road swing at Northeastern.
