Hempstead, NY – Junior Rebecca Barry and freshman Emma Johansson each tallied a goal and an assist and goalie Anna Zarkoski made four saves to lead the Richmond Spiders to a 4-0 non-conference victory over the Hofstra Pride at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.
The Spiders won their third consecutive game to improve to 3-4 on the season while Hofstra, which ended a five-game homestand, slipped to 3-5.
The Pride took nine shots in the contest, including several goalmouth chances in the second half only to have Zarkoski hold on for her second shutout of the season. But, by that time, Richmond had a secure lead after three first half goals. Junior midfielder Rebecca Barry opened the scoring 10:48 into the contest on a perfect three-quarter length of the field pass from sophomore Amy Cooke to Barry, behind the Pride defense. Barry dribbled the ball in mid-air off her stick several times before flipping a shot over Pride senior goalie
Kaitlyn De Turo (3 saves) for a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Taylor Deitrick made it 2-0 almost four minutes later off a pass from Johansson. Sophomore Kerri McDonald tallied an unassisted goal off a rebound on the side of the goal with 2:52 remaining in the period to boost the lead to 3-0 at halftime. Hofstra outshot the Spiders, 5-4 in the first half.
Hofstra had several chances midway through the second half as both Pride junior
Jonel Boileau and freshman
Emily Gallagher had shots stopped by Zarkoski to preserve the shutout. Johansson closed out the scoring with 14:10 to play in the contest, deflecting a Barry shot past De Turo for the 4-0 final. Richmond outshot the Pride, 10-9 in the contest while Hofstra had three penalty corners to the Spiders one.
The Pride return to action on Sunday (Sept. 22) when they travel to Amherst, Massachusetts to face the seventh-ranked Minutemen of UMass. Game time at Garber Field is 1 p.m.
