BB: Middle-Inning Rallies Push Towson Over Hofstra

3/15/2013 10:33:00 PM

Hempstead, N.Y. - Towson's Peter Bowles went 4-for-6 with five RBIs as Hofstra fell to the Tigers, 14-4, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Friday afternoon at University Field.

Junior outfielder TJ Ehrsam scored two runs for Hofstra while senior Jared Hammer went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. But Towson scored three runs in the fifth to break a 1-all deadlock and added four more runs in the sixth as Hofstra fell to 4-12 and 0-4 in league play.  The Tigers tacked on five ninth-inning runs to improve to 9-7 and 2-2.

Hofstra's David D'Errico made his first start in almost a calendar year and looked sharp. The junior right-hander allowed just two hits and a walk in three scoreless innings with the North Kingstown, R.I. native on a pitch count after Tommy John surgery shut him down after his last start on March 23, 2012. D'Errico had made one relief appearance this season before getting the start against the Tigers.

Hammer opened the scoring in the first when the first baseman lined a single up the middle to score Ehrsam from second with a two-out hit in the opener of the three-game series.

That would mark the only offense until the fourth as D'Errico and Towson starter Mike Volpe exchanged zeros. The Tigers scored the equalizer in the top of the fourth against junior Brett Schreiber, who entered the day having not allowed an earned run in his first 13 innings. Bowles hit a one-out double to right center and scored on Kurt Wertz's RBI single to right field.

Towson mounted a two-out rally in the fifth to take the lead for good. After Brandon Gonnella's double sandwiched  a ground out and a strikeout, Hofstra issued an intentional walk. Andrew Parker responded with a RBI single to center and Bowles lined his second clutch hit of the game with a two-run single.

Schreiber (0-1) recorded two outs in the sixth while allowing a single before giving way to reliever John Schilt. A catcher's interference call and a walk loaded the bases and Parker's base-on-balls forced in a run. For the third time in the contest, Bowles delivered with two outs, singling through the right side to plate two more runs.

Hofstra struck back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Hammer hit a leadoff single. Austin Nyman and Kevin Brantley also singled and Joe Perez picked up a RBI with a bases-loaded walk.  Robbie Cafiero brought in the second run on a fielder's choice, though Volpe induced a ground out to cap and his outing and improve to 3-0 with three strikeouts total in six innings.

Towson scored again in the seventh and Hofstra responded with one run in the bottom of the inning on Kenny Jackson's RBI ground out.

Dominic Fratantuono contributed to the five-run ninth for Towson with a two-run double. Brandon Gonnella also brought in a run on a double, Bowles  drove in another run with a double (his second extra-base hit) and the Tigers ended the scoring on a wild pitch.

Hofstra and Towson will play the middle game of the series on Saturday at noon.
