Harrisonburg, VA - Hofstra's Jared Hammer had three hits, including
two doubles, and three RBIs but Tyler Duke had a grand slam and five RBIs as
James Madison built a 9-0 lead and then held off Hofstra rallies in a 10-6 win
Sunday at Eagle Field at Veterans Park.
Hofstra fell to 3-11 on the year and 0-3 in the Colonial
Athletic Association with the loss. James Madison improved to 9-6, 3-0 on the
year.
The Dukes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Johnny
Bladel and Ty McFarland led off the game with back-to-back doubles for a 1-0
lead. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Casey Goss drove in the
second run with a single. Following a fielder's choice that resulted in an out
at home, Duke knocked in the final run with a single up the middle.
JMU loaded the bases again in the second and Chad Carroll
delivered a two-run single to make it a 5-0 game. That was all for Pride
starter Jared Rogers, who was relieved by Andrew Barbarino. The senior righty
got the second out of the inning by getting Goss to pop out to short. But he
hit Cole McInturff to load the bases again and Duke came through with a grand
slam for a 9-0 lead.
Hofstra got a run back in the third as Bryan Verbitsky and
Taylor Stuart both singled to start the inning with Verbitsky coming in to
score on a JMU error on a grounder from Kenny Jackson. The Pride tacked on a
second run in the fourth on Austin Nyman's sacrifice fly that scored Hammer,
who had doubled to start the inning.
A three run seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from
Jared Hammer, pulled the Pride within four at 9-5, but JMU scored one run on a
bases loaded walk in its half of the inning to go up by five.
The Pride did plate one run in the ninth as Joe Perez and
Hammer had back-to-back two out doubles. Hofstra would go on to load the bases
on an error and a hit by pitch, but could not push any more runs across.
Rogers (0-3) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing eight hits
and seven runs in 1 1/3 innings. Hofstra's bullpen allowed just three runs the
rest of the way on five hits. Pride junior David D'Errico made his first
appearance of the year for Hofstra in his return from Tommy John surgery and
pitched a perfect sixth inning.
Stuart and Matt Reistetter were the only other Pride players
with multiple hits, as both collected two.
JMU starter Michael Howerton (2-0) went 6 1/3 innings to
pick up the win, allowing eight hits and four runs.
The Pride is back in action Tuesday when it travels to St.
John's for a 3 p.m. game.
