Harrisonburg, VA - James Madison rallied for two runs in the
bottom of the ninth in game one to post a 12-11 victory and then won in less
dramatic fashion in game two, 18-3, as the Dukes swept a Colonial Athletic
Association doubleheader from the Pride Saturday.
Hofstra falls to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the CAA with the
losses, while James Madison improves to 8-6 and 2-0 in league play.
James Madison led game one, 10-3, after six innings and
appeared to be headed for an easy win before the Pride struck for eight runs
over the last three frames, including a five-run seventh, to take an 11-10
advantage going to the bottom of the ninth. Taylor Stuart tied the game at 10
with a two-run home run in the eighth and Robbie Cafiero singled home the
go-ahead run in the ninth.
Hofstra brought on Bryan Verbitsky, who was 3-3 in save
situations this season and had a 0.00 ERA, to close the game. But Cole
McInturff led off with a single and came in to tie the score on Tyler Gregory's
double. After a ground out moved Gregory to third, Verbitsky hit Johnny Bladel
to put runners on the corners. Ty McFarland then delivered a game-winning
sacrifice fly to plate Gregory with the winning run.
Chris Huffman (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the
Dukes. Verbitsky (0-1) took the loss for the Pride. Chris Nardo, who was making
his second consecutive start, had four hits, two runs and two RBIs in the game
for the Pride. Verbitsky did have a good day at the plate as he started at
designated hitter and went 2-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Joe Perez also had
two hits and two RBIs, while Jared Hammer had three hits and Cafiero added two
hits and an RBI. Hofstra collected 19 hits in the game.
McInturff and Bladel both had three hits to pace the Dukes
offense. Chad Carroll knocked in three runs for JMU.
In game two the Dukes jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four
complete before Hofstra scored three times in the fifth to make it a 5-3 game.
But the Dukes would then score six runs in the bottom of the inning and three
more in the sixth to take a commanding 14-3 lead. Three Hofstra errors in the fifth
led to five unearned runs. Bobby San Martin had a two-run double in the fifth
inning and Matt Tenaglia delivered a two-run double in the sixth.
JMU would add four runs in the eighth as McFarland had an
RBI double and Tenaglia came through with his second two-RBI two-bagger of the
game.
Aaron Hoover (1-0) picked up the win with four innings of
two-hit relief. Hofstra starter John Tiedemann (0-4) took the loss as he
allowed eight hits and five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Kenny Jackson was the offensive star for the Pride in game
two as he went 3-3 with an RBI. Cafiero was the only other Pride player with
multiple hits as he delivered two and a run scored.
Tenaglia finished with six RBIs in the game and McFarland
had five hits and three RBIs.
The teams conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
