Newark, Del. – Junior forward Sam Scolarici scored Hofstra's only goal and the Pride held Delaware to just three shots on goal in a 1-1 tie in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Friday night at a rainy Delaware Mini-Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Morphitis made two saves, including a stop in the first overtime, to help Hofstra move to 8-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in CAA play. Delaware's Shannon Kearney also scored a second half goal to give the Blue Hens a point as her squad is now 7-6-1 and 1-2-1.
Senior defender Ruby Staplehurst ensured Hofstra picked up a point by making a defensive save with just 56 seconds left in double overtime to prevent Delaware' Natalie Zelenky's shot from crossing the goal line.
Neither team mustered much offense in regulation with the exception of one frantic minute. The teams exchanged goals just 36 seconds apart in the 61st minute, setting up Hofstra's second overtime CAA game in the last three contests. Hofstra posted its first tie since last year's CAA Tournament semifinal contest officially ended in a scoreless tie (the Pride advanced in a shootout).
Galton, the CAA's Preseason Player of the Year, was originally credited with the goal before the official scorer attributed the marker to Scolarici. Scolarici picked up her CAA-leading 30th point with her 14th goal of the season, which is a personal high. She trails the program's single-season record of 17 with four regular season games remaining.
Galton hit Scolarici with a pass and the forward sent a shot past Delaware keeper Jessica Levy at 60:07. The edge was short lived as Kearney scored at 60:43 when she tapped in Maddy Parker's free kick from nearly 40 yards out.
Staplehurst, sophomore Mallory Ullrich and senior Caylin Dudley played all 110 minutes on the backline with sophomore midfielders Jeannine Molleda and Chloe Dale also playing the entire game from midfield positions.
Galton, who also did not come out of the game, logged five of Hofstra's 14 total shots. The Pride generated 10 corners and surrendered just three to Delaware. Scolarici also played the entire game.
Senior Amber Stobbs came off the bench and provided two shots in 71 minutes.
Dudley nearly opened the scoring 28 minutes into the game when her shot hit the post. Galton made a bid for a two-goal game later in the contest but Levy made the save in the third minute of the first overtime.
Both teams were credited with defensive saves as Brittany Bonzano made a stop on Galton's 55th-minute shot and Staplehurst prevented a Delaware goal in the final minute.
The Pride will continue a road trip with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday at Drexel.
