Hempstead, NY - Hofstra goalie Kaitlyn De Turo turned away six shots but Tribe senior Leah Zamesnik's first half goal propelled 20th-ranked William and Mary to a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Pride at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Pride, who dropped their second consecutive game and fourth in the last five outings, is now 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the CAA. William and Mary improved to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

In a well-played contest for both teams at both ends of the field, Zamesnik broke a defensive struggle at the 19:41 mark of the contest. After a Tribe penalty corner, senior defender Christine Johnson fired a shot that Zamesnik tipped past De Turo (South Setauket, NY) for her second goal of the season. The Pride outshot William and Mary, 8-5 in the first half as Tribe senior goalie Elizabeth Frey made five of her nine saves in the first half.

The second half was mostly played in the midfield area although William and Mary took six shots and forced De Turo to make five of her six saves in the final 35 minutes. Hofstra had chances to get the equalizer, taking five shots, including four on Frey, but couldn't put the ball in the goal. Pride sophomore forward Holly Andrews (Afton, NY) had two good opportunities, the first two minutes into the half and the second with just under two minutes remaining. But Frey made the stops to preserve the victory.

Hofstra outshot the Tribe, 13-11 in the contest and took seven penalty corners to William and Mary's five. The Tribe victory snapped a three-game Hofstra winning streak over William and Mary. The Tribe lead the series, 9-6.

The Pride will now hit the road for three games. Hofstra will return to action on Friday, September 28 when they travel to Richmond, Virginia to face Virginia Commonwealth. Game time is 3 p.m.
