Hempstead, NY - Senior Micaela Gallagher tallied two goals and two assists and junior goalie Kaitlyn De Turo recorded seven saves as the Hofstra Pride defeated the Monmouth Hawks, 6-0 at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday. The Pride improved to 2-0 on the young season while the Hawks fell to 0-2.

Gallagher, the midfielder from Port Jefferson, NY, who notched her single game high with two assists and equaled her game-best with six points to go with her two goals. Du Turo, a native of South Setauket, NY, recorded posted her second consecutive victory and her first career shutout.


Senior defender and co-captain Krizia Layne (Arima, Trinidad) posted a goal and an assist, sophomore midfielder Marta Penas (Barcelona, Spain) tallied two assists while sophomores Jonel Boileau (Kelowna, BC, Canada) and Holly Andrews (Afton, NY) and freshman Lauren del Valle (Exton, PA) each tallied solo goals.


Hofstra, which scored two goals in the first half and four in the second half, opened the scoring 5:47 into the contest as del Valle took a feed across the goal mouth from Layne for her first collegiate goal and a 1-0 lead. Almost 14 minutes later, Layne, who tallied 20 goals and 13 assists last year, scored her first goal of the season by redirecting a Gallagher pass at the right post for a 2-0 advantage. Hofstra dominated play in the first half, outshooting the Hawks, 13-3, with Monmouth junior goalie Teresa Mathews' five saves in the period keeping the score at 2-0 at halftime.


But while the Hawks challenged the Hofstra goal several times in the second half only to have De Turo make five of her seven saves in the second half, the Pride exploded for four more goals. Boileau, who tallied two goals in the season opener on Friday, notched her third goal of the season just 2:46 into the second, squeezing a shot past Mathews on the end line after taking a pass from Penas. A little more than 13 minutes later Gallagher notched her second of the season off a pass from Penas for a 4-0 lead.


Andrews tallied her first collegiate goal with 7:24 to play off a pass from Gallagher on a penalty corner and Gallagher closed out the scoring with her second of the game and third of the season, with 1:23 to play, off a centering pass from senior Melissa McCarthy (Havertown, PA).


Hofstra outshot Monmouth, 26-9 and had 11 penalty corners to the Hawks seven. Mathews finished with 13 saves. The Pride boosted their series record against Monmouth to 6-0.


The Pride return to action on Friday, August 31 when they travel upstate to face the Great Danes of the University at Albany at 3 p.m.
