Piscataway, NJ - Nick Kozlowski, Brett Schreiber and Dave Jesch combined on the shutout and Matt Reistetter drove in three runs in a 7-0
Pride victory over Rutgers Tuesday afternoon. The shutout was Hofstra's second in its past three games.
Hofstra improved to 26-17 with its sixth straight win. The
Pride is now one win from tying the program record for single season victories.
Rutgers drops to 26-18 with the loss.
Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Danny Poma laced a one-out double, his NCAA-leading 27th of the year, and
came in two batters later on Jared Hammer's single to right. The RBI was the 55th
of the season for the junior first baseman.
Hofstra extended to a 2-0 lead in the second as Taylor Stuart singled to lead off the inning and then stole second. He advanced to
third on a fly out and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matt Reistetter.
The Pride tacked on a run in the eighth as Austin Nyman led
off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and then came in on a Matt Ford single. Hofstra added four more runs in the ninth as Reistetter delivered
a two-run single that scored Kevin Flynn and Stuart. Reistetter came home on an
RBI single by Nyman. Nyman then stole second and on a ball four pitch to
Dalton Rouleau, stole third. The ball was thrown into the outfield, allowing
Nyman to score and Rouleau to take second.
Kozlowski started for the Pride, his first career start, and
went four innings. The red-shirt freshman allowed six hits, walked two and
struck out three. Schreiber (3-1) followed with four scoreless innings of work,
allowing five hits with three strikeouts. Jesch, who started Sunday and went
just one inning, threw the ninth and walked two batters.
Nyman and Stuart both had two hits on the day for the Pride,
which collected 10 hits on the day. Rutgers had 11 hits, including three from
Steve Zavala, but left 11 runners on base. Hofstra was also aided by two double
plays.
Patrick O'Leary fell to 2-1 after allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings of work for Rutgers
Hofstra is back in action this weekend when it welcomes
Northeastern to University Field for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association
series. First pitch Friday afternoon is set for 3 p.m.
