WREST: Seven From Hofstra Ranked as NCAA Unveils Allocations

2/25/2012 12:39:00 AM

Hempstead, NY - As the Hofstra Wrestling team prepares for next weekend's 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championships on March 3 at Binghamton University, the NCAA has announced its final Coaches' Panel rankings, the Division I Rating Percentage Index (RPI) and the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Qualifier Allocations.

Each of the 10 qualifying tournaments was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data (see chart below). Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage; rating percentage index (RPI); and coaches ranking.

For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his qualifying tournament-for Hofstra it's the CAA Championship-was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class. Each qualifying tournament, with automatic qualifying status, was awarded a minimum of one wrestler per weight class, which will go to the tournament champion, even if they did not have any wrestlers reach at least two of the three thresholds. NCAA tournament spots for each qualifying event will be awarded at the tournament based solely on place-finish.

Twenty-nine of the 33 spots in each of the 10 weight classes have been allocated to the qualifying tournaments with the CAA Championships receiving 23 spots. The Big Ten Conference received 74 spots, followed by the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) with 46, the Big 12 with 31, the ACC with 25, the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) with 24, the CAA with 23, the Mid-American Conference (MAC) with 20, the Pac-12 with 19, the West Regional with 17 and the Southern Conference with 11.

The CAA received four spots at 165 pounds, three each at 197 and 285 pounds, two each at 133, 141, 149, 157, 174 and 184 pounds, and one at 125 pounds.

After all of the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 7. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; qualifying event placement; quality wins; results against common opponents; winning percentage; RPI; coaches ranking and the number of matches contested at that weight class.

Six Hofstra wrestlers were ranked in the top 33 in both the Coaches' Panel rankings and the RPI while a seventh was ranked in the top 33 of the RPI. Heading the list is 184-pound senior Ben Clymer (26-6), who is ranked 12th in the coaches' panel and eighth in the RPI. Junior 125-pounder Steve Bonanno (25-6) is ranked 12th by the coaches and 14th in the RPI. Senior 165-pounder P.J. Gillespie (26-5) is ranked 16th by the coaches and 11th in the RPI. Red-shirt sophomore Jamie Franco (19-10), a 133-pounder, is ranked 24 by the coaches' and 17th in the RPI while red-shirt junior Justin Accordino (21-10), at 149 pounds, is ranked 20th by the coaches' and 22nd in the RPI. Red-shirt sophomore Luke Vaith (19-8), who is the final wrestler ranked in both, placed 24th by the coaches' and 27th in the RPI at 141 pounds. Junior 285-pounder Paul Snyder (17-11) is ranked 32nd in only the RPI heading into the CAA Championships. Hofstra has qualified seven or more wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in 10 of the last 11 seasons including a school-best nine in 2005.

The Pride has captured nine of the last 10 CAA Championships, missing out on the gold in only 2010. The 2012 CAA Championships, which have been changed to a one-day affair this year, will be held in the Binghamton University Events Center.
