Philadelphia, Pa. - Hofstra junior Shaun Foster was named
the Colonial Athletic Association's Co-Defensive Player of the Year while
freshman Joseph Holland earned the conference's Rookie of the Year honors, the
league announced tonight on the eve of the semifinals of the CAA Men's Soccer Championship.
Foster was named to the All-Conference first-team while
Holland, junior Chris Griebsch and sophomore Maid Memic made the All-Conference
second team based on a vote by the league's head coaches. Holland also made the All-Rookie squad.
Northeastern's Dan Anding was named the CAA Player of the
Year while Northeastern's Brian Ainscough and Drexel's Doug Hess were
Co-Coaches of the Year.
Foster earned at least a share of Defensive Player of the
Year honors for a third straight season. The Southport, England native shared
the award with Northeastern's Simon Cox.
With his selection, Foster made conference history by
becoming the first three-time winner of the CAA Defensive Player of the Year award.
The back, who will exhaust his collegiate eligibility after this season, was
the leader of a Hofstra defense that allowed only 21 goals in 19 contests and
posted seven shutouts, including four in CAA play. Offensively, Foster
contributed two goals and an assist. Both goals were game-winners.
Holland (London, England) was Hofstra's second-leading scorer with six
goals and ranked third on the team with 14 points. The freshman midfielder, who
made 17 starts, contributed goals in the Pride's conference road victories at
George Mason and Delaware. He's the second Hofstra player to be chosen as
Rookie of the Year, joining Foster in 2010.
Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany) was named to the second-team after
picking up All-Conference third team honors as a sophomore in 2011. After
leading the CAA in assists with 10 in 2011, he again racked up 10 assists this
season, which is four more than the next-closest player in the conference.
Griebsch also has scored four goals, giving him 18 points, which put him eighth
in the league with a 1.06 points-per-game average.
Memic (Kozarac, Bosnia) registered
his first end-of-season CAA award after scoring a career high eight goals in 19
games entering the CAA Championship semifinals. Memic has been a clutch player
for Hofstra, notching four game-winning goals while leading the team in total
goals and points (20). He was in the league's top-10 in goals, points, points
per game, shots and shots-per-game.
Fourth-seeded Hofstra moved past fifth-seeded George Mason on penalty
kicks in the quarterfinals. The Pride will now face top-seeded Drexel on Friday
at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
