Hempstead,
N.Y. - The Hofstra women's soccer team will be looking to atone for a close
loss in the regular season finale when the Pride travels north to face
Northeastern in a CAA Tournament quarterfinal matchup on Sunday at 4 p.m. from
Parsons Field.
The
Pride fell to the Huskies, 3-2, at home on Wednesday to cap the regular season
at 10-8 overall and 6-4 in CAA play. Hofstra is the fifth seed and will face a
fourth-seeded Northeastern squad that is 9-9 overall and 7-3 against the
league.
Hofstra qualified
for its sixth consecutive CAA Championship and is 7-7-1 all-time in the
tournament (penalty kick defeats officially count as ties). The road match will
give Hofstra a chance to snap a three-game losing streak in which all defeats
came by a single goal to close the regular season.
Head
coach Simon Riddiough, who has never had a losing season in his seven years at
the helm, will bring a talented team into Brookline, MA. Hofstra is out-scoring
CAA teams, 21-14, while having three players in the CAA's top-10 in points with
freshmen Leah Galton (Harrogate, England), Jill Mulholland (Levittown, N.Y.)
and Lulu Echeverry (East Meadow, N.Y.).
Galton
is a strong candidate for CAA Rookie of the Year, entering the tournament with
the league's second-highest point total with 26, giving her a per-game average
of 1.44. Her 11 goals is also second, placing her just two behind UNC
Wilmington's Stephanie Rose for the most in the league. Galton's four assists
also places her in the top-10.
Mulholland
and Echeverry both have 17 points, tying them for eighth in the CAA. All of
Hofstra's top-four scorers are all either freshmen or sophomores. First-year
standouts Mulholland and Galton have provided scoring from the outset of their
college careers while sophomore Sam Scolarici (Aldie, Va.) and Echeverry have
taken steps forward from stellar freshman seasons. The quartet has combined for
75 of Hofstra's 103 points this year.
William
and Mary earned the top seed in the six-team tournament with Drexel coming in
second. Both teams will have a first-round bye and an automatic trip to the
semifinals. The Tribe will host the CAA championship by virtue of the first
seed. UNC Wilmington is the third seed and will host sixth-seeded Delaware on
Sunday in the other quarterfinal matchup.
Northeastern's
Devin Griffin scored an early goal while Greta Samuelsdottir and Hanna Terry
scored in the second-half. Terry converted a penalty kick attempt in the 78th
minute to break a deadlock and propel Northeastern to the victory. Hofstra
still leads, 10-6-1, in the all-time series.
Northeastern has won five of the last six games. The Huskies offense is led by
senior forward Samuelsdottir, who is tied for the sixth-highest total
points in the league with 18.
Behind Samuelsdottir's eight goals is sophomore midfielder Hannah O'Donnell
with four scoring strikes. The offense has supported sophomore goalkeeper Paige
Burnett, who was sharp against the Pride in posting eight saves (including
three in the second half). Hofstra junior goalkeeper Emily Morphitis has played
all but 5:05 in net for Hofstra this season, posting four individual shutouts
and combing on another.
Hofstra's
defense has been a strength of the team and will look to complement the
offensive weapons. Junior Ruby Staplehurst (London, England) has been a
fixture on set pieces in taking the majority of Hofstra's free kicks. She has played
in every game, making 17 starts, and already has a team-high six assists this
season, including one on Galton's second-half goal against Northeastern. Staplehurst
entered the CAA Tournament third in the CAA in assists.
Fellow junior Brittany Farriella (Lake Grove, N.Y.) has
started 13 of 16 games and showed she can also contribute on the offensive end
by scoring a goal on the road against a William and Mary unit that finished in
first place. The Pride will also be bolstered by the return of senior defender
Brooke Bendernagel (Smithtown, N.Y.), who will be back in the lineup after
sitting out the first Northeastern game because of a red card incurred in the
previous game.
