Orono, ME - Pride senior Krizia Layne scored her second goal of the season that tied the game but Maine sophomore Annabelle Hamilton broke the tie with 4:29 to play in the second half as the Black Bears defeated Hofstra, 2-1 in a non-conference game at the Maine Field Hockey Complex Sunday afternoon.

The Black Bears, who snapped a three-game losing skid, improve to 10-8 on the season. The Pride, who dropped their second consecutive game, fall to 6-10 on the year.

Maine opened the scoring just 7:31 into the contest when freshman Cassidy Svetek took a pass from sophomore Holly Stewart and tipped the ball over Pride goalie Kaitlyn De Turo for a 1-0 lead. It was Svetek's eighth goal of the year. The Pride did not get off a shot in the first and were outshot, 6-0.

But Krizia Layne, the native of Arima, Trinidad who scored a career-high 20 goals last year before moving back to the defensive line, evened the game at 1-1 just 4:12 into the second half. Layne tipped in classmate's Micaela Gallagher's shot off a penalty corner at the right post for her second goal of the year and tie the game at 1-1.

While the Pride played more inspired field hockey in the second half, taking five shots and six penalty corners in the final 35 minutes, it was the Black Bears who got the game-winner late in the contest. Hamilton fired a reverse stick blast from near the top of the left side of the circle past De Turo with 4:29 to play in regulation. It was Hamilton's ninth goal of the season and her fourth game-winning goal.

Maine outshot the Pride, 12-5 in the contest while Hofstra had six penalty corners to the Black Bears four. De Turo finished up with five saves including three in the second half for the Pride. Maine senior Alicia Frisch needed to make just one save in the contest.

The Pride, who concluded their non-conference schedule Sunday with a 6-5 record, will now turn their attention to qualifying for the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Tournament. Hofstra, 0-5 in conference play, will be looking to become the sixth and final qualifier for the CAA Championship that begins on November 1 when they host the Towson Tigers (1-16, 0-5) on Friday, October 26 at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is 3 p.m. The Pride will conclude their regular season on Sunday, October 28 when they host Drexel (11-6, 3-2) at 1 p.m.
