5/21/2011 11:45:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - The Pride won game one in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn the series win, while Old Dominion took the second game, 8-4, to avoid being swept in the series.

Taylor Stuart's two-out single to center in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Jared Hammer with the winning run as Hofstra rallied to win game one of a doubleheader over Old Dominion, 6-5, Saturday afternoon. Hofstra came back from a 4-0 deficit and sent the game into extra innings with a ninth-inning rally.

The Monarchs got on the board in the fourth inning of game one when Chris Baker lifted a solo home run to right center. The Monarchs then scored three times in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. Baker had an RBI single in the inning, while two other runs came in on Hofstra errors.

The Pride cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh as T.J. Thomas had a three-run double. But ODU tacked on an insurance run in the eighth to lead 5-3.

But the Pride got a run back in the eighth on a RBI single from Matt Reistetter. Then after Andrew Barbarino got the Monarchs out in order in the ninth, Hofstra again rallied for a run to tie the score on Dylan Nasiatka's sacrifice fly.

After Barbarino pitched a scoreless 10th inning, the Pride came up in the bottom of the inning against Monarch reliever Joe Haumacher. Danny Poma led off with a ground out. Hammer then singled to left field. Joe Perez flied out for the second out before Scott A'Hara singled to put runners on first and second. That set the stage for Stuart, who took a 1-1 pitch and hit it deep to centerfield and over the head of ODU's Kenny Stoneback, who had been playing shallow.

Stuart, who had come in as a pinch-runner earlier in the game, finished one-for-two with the RBI. Hammer went three-for-five with two runs scored. Barbarino picked up his second win of the series, pitching 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief with three strikeouts, to improve to 3-1 on the year. Haumacher took the loss and fell to 1-5 on the season.

In the nightcap, ODU jumped out to a 7-0 lead en route to salvaging the series finale with an 8-4 win. Chris baker was the offensive catalyst for the Monarchs, going five-for-five with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs.

The Monarchs scored twice in the first off of Pride starter Rob Kumbatovic (1-9) with Baker collecting an RBI double and Shawn Sizemore an RBI single. ODU would add three more in the second on Brent Frazier's three-run home run to lead 5-0. Baker's two-run home run in the fifth extended the lead to 7-0.

The Pride got on the board in the fifth as T.J. Thomas doubled and came in on Logan Davis' single. After ODU tacked on a run in the seventh on a Baker single, the Pride scored three times in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit in half at 8-4. Kenny Jackson led off with a pinch hit single and Davis followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Bryan Verbitsky then hit a pinch hit double to the left center gap to drive in both runs. After a wild pitch moved Verbitsky to third, Taylor Stuart singled to center to make it an 8-4 game and cap off the scoring.

ODU starter Phil McCarthy picked up the win to improve to 8-4. McCarthy allowed nine hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings. Kumbatovic was charged with seven runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Davis went three-for-four with a run and an RBI in game two, while Dylan Nasiatka had two hits and a run scored.

The contests marked the final games in the careers of Pride seniors Scott A'Hara, Sean Monaghan, Jeff Guthridge and Kumbatovic. A'Hara started both games in the outfield and went three-for-eight with a double and two runs scored on the afternoon. Monaghan pitched 1 1/3 innings in game two, while Guthridge threw 1/3 of an inning in both ends of the doubleheader.

Hofstra ends the season with a record of 15-32, 12-18 in the CAA. Old Dominion, which will be the #2 seed in the CAA Championship this week, is 28-24, 19-11 in the CAA.
