Hempstead, NY - Thomas Pope went three-for-three with three runs and five RBIs in game one and Travis Bradley pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in game two as the CAA-leading Seahawks swept a doubleheader from the Pride Friday afternoon, 11-6 and 8-2. Joe Perez
homered for Hofstra in both ends of the doubleheader.
The Seahawks (23-16, 12-5) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game one, scoring twice in the second and five times in the third. The big blow was a grand slam home run off the bat of Pope, his third round-tripper of the year, which gave UNCW a 6-0 advantage. Jake Koenig would later add an RBI single to make it 7-0.
The Pride got two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Jared Hammer
reached on a two-out single and Perez followed with his sixth home run of the year to make it 7-2. But the Seahawks got those runs back in the fifth as Pope walked, stole second and came in on Alex Hill's double. Ryan LaGrange then singled in Hill to make it a 9-2 game.
The Pride cut it to 9-6 with a four-run sixth with Perez contributing an RBI double in the frame. But the Pride could not produce another rally and UNCW tacked on two in the ninth to make it an 11-6 final.
Hofstra starter David D'Errico
took the loss for the Pride, falling to 4-4 after allowing eight hits and seven runs in a season-low three innings. Daniel Cropper (6-1) picked up the win, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing 10 hits and six runs (five earned).
In game two the Seahawks broke a 1-1 tie with three runs, all with two outs, in the fourth and went on to an 8-2 win. Each team scored a run in the second as LaGrange had a sacrifice fly for UNCW and Perez a leadoff home run for the Pride. But in the fourth, after retiring the first two batters, Hofstra starter Rob Kumbatovic
gave up back-to-back singles to Pope and Hill and then walked LaGrange to load the bases. Koenig then delivered a two-run single and Drew Farber followed with a run-scoring single of his own for a 4-1 lead.
The Pride cut it to 4-2 in their half of the fourth as Danny Poma
drew a one out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a balk. Following a walk to Perez, Kenny Jackson
lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Poma.
The Seahawks would score three more run in the seventh and add one in the ninth to account for the final score.
Bradley, who came on in relief after starter Blaze Tart was injured, allowed four hits in 4 2/3 innings to notch his first win of the year against three losses. Kumbatovic took the loss for the Pride and falls to 1-6 after allowing 11 hits and six earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Perez finished the doubleheader three-for-eight with two home runs, a double and four RBIs. Dylan Nasiatka
, Poma and Hammer also contributed three hits on the afternoon.
The two teams will attempt to play the third and final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The start time has been push up an hour to try and beat the rain that is forecasted for the area.
