Hempstead, NY - Hofstra starter Rob Kumbatovic went seven strong innings, allowing seven hits and one run with four strikeouts, and Joe Perez was two-for-four with a home run and two RBIs to help lead the Pride to a 5-2 win over George Mason Saturday at University Field. The win, Hofstra's second consecutive over the Patriots, improves the Pride to 8-20, 7-10 in the CAA. George mason falls to 15-21-1, 3-13 in the CAA.
The Pride would score all they would need in the second inning as Perez led off with a solo home run to left field, his fifth of the year, for a 1-0 lead. Following a fly out, Dylan Nasiatka reached on an error and came all the way around on a double by Kenny Jackson. After Jackson went to third on a balk by Mason starter Ryan Pfaeffle, Logan Davis singled to right for a 3-0 lead.
The Patriots got on the board with a run in the fourth as Blaise Fernandez lifted a two-out double to left and Zack Helgeson followed with a double off the fence in left to drive in the first run of the game for George Mason.
The Pride got the run back in their half of the inning as Jackson reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and came in on Taylor Stuart's single to right that second baseman Brig Tison almost gloved. Hofstra tacked on a fifth run in the fifth when Danny Poma led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jared Hammer, stole third and came home on a single by Perez.
George Mason closed out the scoring in the eighth off of reliever Andrew Barbarino as Helgeson's two-out double down the left field line scored Dan Shafferman from first. The Patriots got the leadoff man on in the ninth, but Barbarino retired the next three batters including Tison on an acrobatic catch by Hammer in foul territory to end the game.
Kumbatovic (1-5) earns his first win of the season, as he tied his longest outing of the year. Pfaeffle falls to 3-3 with the loss after allowing seven hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings. Chris O'Grady struck out seven batters in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Logan Davis finished with two hits for the Pride as well. Fernandez had three hits for George Mason
