3/19/2011 9:40:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - D.J. Long scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a throwing error on a double steal in the top of the seventh as Delaware held off Hofstra, 6-5, Saturday afternoon to take the second game of a three-game CAA series at University Field. Hofstra falls to 2-12 overall, 2-3 in the CAA. Delaware is 9-10, 4-1 in the CAA.

Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Steve Ulaky started a two-out rally with a single. Aaron Mascoe followed with a single of his own and Hank Yates drove in Ulaky with a single for the first run of the game. Hofstra starter Rob Kumbatovic then induced a routine grounder to third that went through the legs of Joe Perez for an error and allowed Mascoe to score the second run.

Hofstra cut the deficit in half in the fifth as T.J. Thomas had a one-out single and Kevin Flynn walked to put runners on first and second. Following a fly out for the second out of the inning, Danny Poma hit a deep double to right center that plated Thomas, but Flynn was thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning.

The Blue hens tacked on three runs in the sixth as Mascoe and Yates singled off of Kumbatovic to start the inning. Stephan Kungl came on to relieve Kumbatovic and retired the first batter he faced. But Alex Mottle singled to right and the ball was misplayed by Thomas, allowing both runs to score with Mottle ending up at third base. Logan Gallagher then singled in Mottle before a double play ended the rally.

Hofstra got the three runs back in the bottom of the frame as Dylan Nasiatka walked. Nick Stampone relieved Delaware starter Devon Pearson and promptly gave up singles to Joe Perez and Jared Hammer to lead the bases. He then hit Bryan Verbitsky to force home a run. Matt Harden came on to pitch and uncorked a wild pitch that let Perez come in with the second run of the inning. After a fielder's choice resulted in an out at home, Jeff Murray came on to pitch for the Blue Hens and got a fielder's choice ground out before surrendering an RBI single to Flynn to make it a 5-4 game.

In the seventh Long led off with a single and Pat Dameron followed suit. Andrew Barbarino came on in relief and got Ulaky to pop up. Jeff Guthridge came in to face Mascoe and got him to strike out swinging, but the Hens pulled off the double steal on the pitch and Nasiatka's throw was wide of second base allowing Long to come in to score the sixth run of the game for Delaware.

Hofstra got one in the ninth and left the tying run on second against Delaware closer Stephen Ritcher. Poma hit a two-out double and Nasiatka followed with a double of his own, but Perez struck out swinging on a fastball to end the threat and the game.

Pearson went five-plus and allowed three hits and two runs to improve to 1-2 on the season. Ritcher picked up his third save of the season. Kumbatovic fell to 0-3 after allowing eight hits and four runs (two earned) in five-plus innings. Guthridge struck out six of the eight batters he faced in two innings of one-hit relief.

Poma had two doubles on the day for the Pride, which had eight hits on the afternoon. Dameron had three of Delaware's 13 hits, while Mascoe and Yates each added two.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
