New Haven, CT - Diane Caldwell and Arielle Williams each scored goals for the Pride but two second
half Bulldog goals gave Yale a 4-2 non-conference victory over Hofstra at
Johnson Field Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 5-3 on the season
while the Pride, which dropped its second consecutive game, had their record
evened at 5-5.
With the score tied at 2-2 following Williams' fourth penalty stroke goal of
the season just 8:21 into the second half, Yale took the lead almost four
minutes later. On the game-winning goal, junior Erin Carter grabbed a rebound
off a save from Hofstra junior goalie Amanda Heyde of a Taylor Sankovich shot
and put the ball into the goal for a 3-2 advantage. It was Carter's second goal
of the season. Senior Johna Paolino scored her second goal of the game, deflecting
junior Mia Rosati's shot, 11 minutes later to give Yale its final two-goal
margin.
In an action-packed first half that featured 25 shots, including 14 by Hofstra,
the Bulldogs opened the scoring 2:39 into the contest as junior Chelsey Locarno
tallied her second goal of the season off a pass from freshman Georgia Holland.
But Hofstra graduate-student Diane Caldwell tied the game with her third goal
of the year at the 12:32 mark, off a pass from junior Genna Kovar. Paolino gave
Yale a 2-1 lead 6:49 before halftime on a pass from Rosati. It was Paolino's
second goal of the year. Both starting
goalies, Heyde for the Pride and senior Katie Boling for Yale, each posted
seven saves in the first half.
The Pride outshot Yale, 23-21, and had six corners to the Bulldogs five. Heyde
finished with 10 saves while Yale freshman Emily Cain played the entire second
half, in relief of Bolling, and made four saves.
Hofstra will continue with the second half of its four-game road trip on
Friday, October 1 when the Pride return to CAA play at #20 James Madison University
in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Game time is 7 p.m.
