MSOC: Griebsch Goal Gives Pride 1-0 Win Over Yale

9/10/2010 11:14:00 PM

Providence, R.I. - Freshman midfielder Chris Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany) scored his first collegiate goal with just under 30 minutes left in regulation to break a 0-0 tie and give Hofstra a 1-0 win over Yale on Friday afternoon on the first day of the Brown Soccer Classic.

With the win, the Pride levels its record at 2-2 on the young season. Yale slips to 0-3 with the defeat.

Griebsch scored his goal on a shot from the top of the penalty area, which beat Yale goalkeeper Bobby Thalman into the lower-right corner. The goal came moments after Yale hit the post on a potential go-ahead shot.

Junior goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Killingworth, Conn.) took it from there as he made two second half saves (three overall) to get the shutout. The clean sheet was the 12th of his three-year career with the Pride, moving him alone into third place on Hostra's career list, just one shy of second place. Matthias Gumbrecht (2002-05) holds the record with 23 shutouts.

The Pride put the pressure on early, as it took four shots in the first nine minutes of the game, including a header from freshman defender Shaun Foster (Southport, England) that was saved by Thalman. Hofstra also closed out the first half with a flurry as sophomores Mike Annarumma (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Thomas Bekas (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each had shots blocked six seconds apart in the 45th minute as the Pride held a 10-5 edge in shots in the first stanza.

Annarumma and Bekas then both had shots saved by Thalman in the opening five minutes of the second half as the game remained scoreless. In the 53rd minute, Annarumma nearly broke the tie, but his bid for a go-ahead goal hit the post. Yale alos hit the post seven minutes later, and Griebsch converted the game-winner on the counter-attack.

The Pride finished with a 19-11 edge in shots on the day to get the win. Thalman had four saves for the Bulldogs in the losing effort.

Hofstra will next be in action when it faces host Brown on the second day of the Brown Soccer Classic on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
