4/18/2010 1:00:00 AM

University Park, PA - Freshman Nick Dolik scored his third goal of the game 50 seconds into the first overtime to give the Penn State Nittany Lions an 11-10 upset victory over the 11th-ranked Hofstra Pride in a CAA contest at Jeffrey Field Saturday night. Penn State won for just the second time this season and improved to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the CAA. The Pride fell to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in the CAA.

Dolik scored the winning goal on a twisting, running bounce shot from 12 yards out that beat Pride sophomore goalie Andrew Gvozden high over his right shoulder. Penn State was led by sophomore Matthew Mackrides with four goals, Dolik with three goals and one assist and freshman Kyle Van Thoff with one goal and two assists. Redshirt freshman goalie Dave Baker made eight saves in the Nittany Lions' cage.

Hofstra was led by sophomore Kevin Ford with three goals, classmate Brad Loizeaux with two goals and one assist, and junior Jamie Lincoln with two goals. Gvozden made nine saves in the Pride goal.

The Nittany Lions jumped on the board first as Kyle Van Thof scored a man-up goal just 2:03 into the contest. Bentz tied the game for the Pride 3:06 later with his 23rd goal of the season. Mackrides gave Penn State a 2-1 lead with 2:28 to play in the quarter with his 28th goal of the year.

Junior Jay Card then started a 6-0 run for Hofstra with just 47 seconds remaining in the first that gave Hofstra a 7-2 lead before halftime. Card notched his 23rd goal of the year, off a pass from Loizeaux to close out the scoring in the first quarter and tie the game at 2-2. Lincoln tallied his 30th of the year 6:45 into the second to give Hofstra its first lead of the game. Two minutes later Ford scored his 10th goal of the year, and Steven DeNapoli scored Hofstra's fourth unassisted goal of the game 13 second later to boost the lead to 5-2. Ford would score a man-up goal, from Card, with 3:51 to play in the half and Loizeaux notched his 14th goal of the season 1:12 later to build the 7-2 advantage.

But the Nittany Lions did not lay down and went on their own 5-0 run, starting with Mackrides scoring twice in the final 1:31 of the half to close the gap to 7-4 at halftime. Mackrides tallied his fourth of the game, on a man-up situation, from Chris Hogan, 4:19 into the third quarter to cut the deficit to two. Nick Dolik scored his 14th of the season with 4:38 to play in the quarter, from Van Thof before Hogan scored his 13th of the year 90 seconds later to tie the game at 7-7.

Loizeaux gave the Pride a short-lived 8-7 lead with his second of the game and 15th of the season with 1:34 to play in the third before Dolik notched his second of the contest with 12 seconds remaining to end three quarters with the score tied at 8-8. The Pride ran into some hard luck in the period firing three shots off the posts behind Baker.

Anthony Basciano broke the tie for Penn State scoring in the first minute of the fourth quarter. But Ford tied the game with 11:44 to play in regulation. Lincoln gave Hofstra a 10-9 advantage with an unassisted goal from six yards with 5:10 to play. Once again, Penn State tied the score with Dolik throwing a pass across the crease to Gribbin, who scooped it up and beat Gvozden from 5 yards with 2:34 to play and send the game into overtime.

The Pride will return to action next Saturday, April 24 when they host the Dolphins of Jacksonville University at James M. Shuart Stadium at 1 p.m.
