THREE PRIDE PLAYERS NAMED TO PUERTO RICO U-21 POOL

2/4/2010 4:09:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra players Steven Ehrichs (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood), A.J. Laza (Coram, NY/Longwood) and Stephan Barea (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) were chosen to the Puerto Rico Under-21 team pool, it was announced this week.

The Puerto Rico Soccer Federation, after a week-long tryouts and evaluating process in January, selected Ehrichs, Laza, and Barea to the Puerto Rico U21 National Team Pool. The selected players from this pool will compete in the Central American and Caribbean Games in July 2010 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Ehrichs, who will be entering his senior season with the Pride in 2010, has previously has played for the Puerto Rico National Team in World Cup qualifying, along with former teammate Richard Martinez (Highland, NY). He had a goal and an assist for Hofstra last season, while appearing in all 17 games in the midfield.

Barea tied for team-high honors with six goals during his freshman season in 2009, and was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie team. He scored just 1:02 into his college career when he tallied the only goal in a 1-0 win over Stony Brook on Sept. 1. He was one of five players to start every game for Hofstra last year.

Laza appeared in 14 games for Hofstra including three starts, before being slowed down by a mid-season injury. He played primarily on the defensive unit, and is expected to be a strong contender to open the 2010 season as a starting central defender.
