College Park, MD- Senior Jonny Bonilla-Bowman (Pomona, NY) and sophomore Ben Clymer (Greensville, PA) posted individual victories for the Pride but it wasn't enough as No. 10 Maryland won eight of the 10 total matches to record a 34-6 victory over Hofstra at the Comcast Pavilion Sunday afternoon.
Bonilla-Bowman, one of two ranked wrestlers for Hofstra, logged the Pride's first victory at 157 pounds when he battled Kyle John to a 15-11 decision. Hofstra still lost for the sixth straight time in dropping to 5-11-2
Clymer provided Hofstra's other highlight, taking down Corey Peltier in the final seconds for a 2-0 win at 184 pounds. Maryland won the next five matches to improve to 18-4.
The match opened up at 149 pounds with Maryland junior Jon Kohler pinning red-shirt freshman Ryan Colmer in 6:29 to give the Terrapins a 6-0 lead. After Bowman cut the lead in half to improve to 14-4 on the year, Maryland's 15th-ranked freshman Josh Asper downed Hofstra's 17th-ranked sophomore P.J. Gillespie (26-12), 6-1, at 165 pounds, and junior Bradley Nielson downed Pride senior Jon Rothman (2-15), 10-3, at 174 pounds to boost the lead to 12-3.
Clymer's 21st win of the season cut the lead to 12-6 but that would be all that Hofstra would get the rest of the match. At 197 pounds, third-ranked senior Hudson Taylor pinned Pride senior Anthony Tortora (8-17) in 2:35 before junior Patrick Gilmore downed Pride red-shirt freshman Paul Snyder (9-13), 6-3, at 285 to boost the lead to 21-6. Senior James Knox edged Pride freshman Jamie Franco (4-13), 4-3, at 125, and 12th-ranked senior Steven Bell pinned Hofstra freshman Luke Vaith (14-16) in 4:46 at 133 pounds for a 30-6 lead in the match. Maryland's ninth-ranked senior Alex Krom recorded a 10-2 major decision over red-shirt freshman Tyler Banks (9-16) at 141 pounds to close out the match.
The Pride return to action on Wednesday, February 17 when they travel to Lawrenceville, New Jersey for a CAA match against Rider University at 7 p.m.
