NORTHEASTERN RALLIES LATE TO DEFEAT HOFSTRA

2/14/2010 8:00:00 PM

Boston, MA - Kim Carr had 21 points and 10 rebounds to offset 14 points from senior center Jess Fuller and 13 points from sophomore guard Nicole Capurso as Northeastern rallied late to defeat Hofstra, 56-52, on Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court.

Hofstra sees its three-game win streak come to an end as they fall to 14-11 overall and 7-6 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.  Northeastern improves to 10-14 and 5-8 in conference action as they ended a two-game losing skid.

Both teams would get off to a slow start in the contest with the score tied at 12 following a pair of free throws from Deanna Kerkhof at the 13:16 mark.  After a three-pointer from Capurso had given the Pride a 12-10 lead shortly before the Kerkhof free throws, Hofstra would be held without a point over the next 4:23 as the Huskies were able to open a 16-12 advantage after two free throws from Kim Carr.  Hofstra would turn the tables on Northeastern, though, as the visitors held the Huskies without a point for a stretch of 6:20 and turned a four-point deficit into a 26-16 lead at the 2:26 mark after one of Capurso's three first half three-pointers.  Capurso, who led all scorers with 11 points in the opening twenty minutes, had six points during the 14-0 Hofstra run that allowed the Pride to regain the lead.

A layup from Carr and a jumper from Kendra Walton in the final minute-plus of the first half would allow the Huskies to cut the deficit to six at the break.

Northeastern would continue its momentum to start the second half as the Huskies would use a 12-1 run spanning the two halves to take a 30-29 lead at the 17:47 mark after a Jamie Conroy basket.

The Huskies, after regaining the lead early in the second half, would hold Hofstra at bay for the majority of the second stanza until back-to-back layups from Fuller put Hofstra back in front 46-45 with 6:42 remaining and forced Northeastern to utilize a timeout.

Senior guard Sam Brigham, who had been held in check all game, would hit a huge three-pointer from the corner with 4:06 left in regulation that put Hofstra ahead 51-48 heading into the final media timeout with 3:14 to play.  It was the Pride's largest lead since leading 28-24 42 seconds into the second half.

Trailing by three late in the contest, Northeastern would battle back and the Huskies would retake the lead, 54-52, on a driving layup from Conroy with 13 seconds left on the clock.

Hofstra would call its final timeout with 10.1 ticks left to set up its final play but the Pride was unable to get a shot off and turned the ball over and lost a hard-fought 56-52 decision.

With her three three-pointers in the contest, Capurso now has 90 and moved into ninth place all-time in career three-pointers.  She passed Lizanne Murphy, who had 88 three-pointers from 2003-07.  Brigham played in her 113th career game this afternoon, which puts her in a tie for fifth all-time in program history with Jenii Reynolds (1988-92) and Tonya Yandrisevitz (1989-93).

Hofstra is back in action on Thursday when they host George Mason at 2 p.m. on "Family Fun Day".
