Hempstead, NY - Senior Jonny Bonilla-Bowman and sophomore Ben Clymer posted Hofstra victories but the Tigers won the other eight matches as #17 Missouri defeated Hofstra, 34-7, at the Mack Sports Complex Friday night. Mizzou improved to 4-4 on the season while the Pride fell to 5-7-2.
The Pride, who were wrestling without senior Paul Snyder at 285 due to injury, gave the Tigers a 6-0 lead as the match began at 285. Dom Bradley (18-5) took the win for Missouri. Hofstra freshman Jamie Franco (4-9) returned to the Pride line-up at 125 pounds after missing seven matches with a shoulder injury but dropped a 3-0 decision to Tiger freshman Eric Wilson (10-6). At 133, Tiger freshman Brad Wisdom (12-1), who is ranked 17th at 125 pounds, cruised to a 13-5 major decision over Hofstra junior Jeff Rotella (3-14).
At 141 pounds, Pride freshman Luke Vaith squared off against junior Todd Schavrien, the 19th ranked wrestler in Division I. Schavrien (19-7) built a 9-1 lead after two periods on the way to a 14-3 major decision over Vaith (13-13) as the Tigers stretched the lead to 17-0 in the match. Missouri made it a clean sweep in the first half of the match when sophomore Scott O'Donnell (10-6) battled red-shirt freshman Tyler Banks (9-14) for a 5-2 victory at 149 pounds to boost the lead to 20-0 at the intermission.
Hofstra's 17th-ranked senior Jonny Bonilla-Bowman (11-3) won his fifth consecutive match of the season with a 21-10 major decision over Tiger sophomore Patrick Wright (17-8). Bonilla-Bowman, who has captured eight of his last nine matches, busted the match open in the second period after a 3-all first period. The three-time conference champion opened an 8-4 lead after two and won going away in the third. At 165, Hofstra sophomore P.J. Gillespie squared off against sixth-ranked Tiger senior Nick Marable, who entered the match with a 25-2 mark. In a close match, Marable took a 4-3 lead into the third period and posted a 7-4 decision over Gillespie (24-10) to boost the match lead to 23-4. Missouri's 10th-ranked sophomore Dorian Henderson (19-8) cruised to a 19-2 tech fall (5:28) win over Pride senior Jon Rothman (2-11) at 174 pounds.
At 184 pounds, Hofstra sophomore Ben Clymer posted a takedown with 52 seconds remaining in the third period to break a 2-all tie and hung on for a 4-3 victory over Tiger red-shirt freshman Todd Porter (13-11). It was Clymer's ninth consecutive victory as he improved to 20-4 on the season including 13-0 in dual matches. In the match finale at 197 pounds, Missouri's 17th-ranked red-shirt freshman Brent Haynes (21-8) pinned Pride senior Anthony Tortora (6-15) in 2:38 to close out the 34-7 victory for the Tigers.
The Pride will return to action on Sunday, January 31 when Pennsylvania comes to the Mack Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
