Fairfax,
VA - Senior Jonny Bonilla-Bowman, sophomore Ben Clymer and red-shirt freshman
Paul Snyder each won all four of their matches to lead the Hofstra Pride to
three victories in four matches at the 2010 CAA Duals at the George Mason
University Field House Saturday.
The Pride (5-6-2) won
their first three matches of the day, downing Sacred Heart (34-13), George
Mason (29-12) and Boston University (23-15) before losing the finale to Old
Dominion (29-10).
Bonilla-Bowman, who is ranked 19th in the country at 157 pounds and improved to
10-3, 4-0 on the season, posted two victories by major decision and one each by
tech fall and decision to give the Pride 16 of their team points. Clymer, who
improved to 19-4, 4-0 at 184 pounds on the season, posted victories by fall,
tech fall and two decisions to account for 17 points. Snyder, who enjoyed the
best day of his young Hofstra career, improved to 9-10, 4-0 with victories by
fall, major decision and two decisions.
Sophomore P.J. Gillespie won three of four matches on the day at 165 pounds to
improve to 24-9, 3-1 on the year while freshman Luke Vaith also captured three
of four matches at 141 pounds to boost his season record to 13-12, 3-1.
In the first match of the day against Sacred Heart, after Pat Feeley gave the
Pioneers a 6-0 lead with a forfeit win at 125 pounds, the Pride won the next
five weight classes, including a victory by fall by junior Jeff Rotella, forfeit
wins by Vaith and red-shirt freshman Tyler Banks at 141 and 149, respectively,
and a major decision by Gillespie, to build a commanding 25-6 lead. The
Pioneers were able to win at 174 and197 pounds but Clymer had sealed the match
at 184 pounds with a win by fall over Sam Sheppard in 1:26 and Snyder added a
victory by decision at 285 for the 34-13 win.
Hofstra's second match of the day put the host Patriots of George Mason on the
mat with the Pride. After a forfeit loss at 125 pounds, the Pride captured
seven of the next nine matches to post a 29-12 victory. Jeff Rotella and Vaith
tallied victories by decision at 133 and 141 pounds to tie the match at 6-6.
After George Mason's Brandon Bucher decisioned Tyler Banks, 6-3 at 149, to give
the Patriots a 9-6 advantage, Bonilla-Bowman recorded a 16-8 major decision
over Aaron Keeton at 157 and Gillespie notched an 18-3 tech fall in 5:26 to
give the Pride the lead for good at 15-9. Mendbagana Tovuujav gave the Patriots
some hope with a 4-2 decision over Jon Rothman at 174 to close to 15-12. But
the Pride won the final three matches including 15-0 tech fall by Clymer over
Jimmy Webb, a 2-1 decision in the tie-breaker by Anthony Tortora over Bill
Widener at 197, and a win by fall by Snyder over Adam Barnette in 2:01 for the
29-12 match final.
The Pride faced Boston University in the third round and the Terriers took a
12-9 lead in the contest with the forfeit win at 125 pounds and decisions at
133 and 149 pounds. But the Pride received an 11-0 major decision from Vaith
over Alex Cournoyer at 141, and Bonilla-Bowman posted a 25-9 tech fall over
Matt Morgenstern at 157. Gillespie gave the Pride a short-lived 13-12 advantage
with a 16-4 major decision over Andrew Swank at 165 pounds. Kyle Czarnecki gave
the Terriers their last lead at 15-13 with a 4-0 decision over Rothman at 174
pounds. The Pride captured the last three matches with Clymer posting a 2-0
decision over Brock Mantella at 184, senior Anthony Tortora adding a 3-1 win
over Dan Kennedy at 197, and Snyder notching a 9-0 major decision over Carmen
Rondash at 285.
In Hofstra's final match of the day against Old
Dominion (7-3-1, 4-0-1), the top team in the CAA, the Pride had their hands
full as the Monarchs jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the first four matches.
Bonilla-Bowman ended the ODU run with a 26-13 major decision over Joseph
Sheridan at 157. But ODU's Chris Brown, ranked number one in the CAA and 15th
in the nation at 165, posted a 3-1 decision over P.J. Gillespie before Eric
Decker pinned Rothman in 1:48 at 174 pounds to build an insurmountable 25-3
lead. Clymer decisioned Joe Budi, 7-2 at 184, before Jesse Strawn posted a 10-1
major decision over Tortora at 197. Snyder ended his perfect day with a 2-0
decision over ODU's Jack Burbank at 285.
Hofstra, which has captured nine consecutive conference team titles, is now
67-2-1 in its last 70 conference
dual matches. The Pride's only losses during that time came against Old
Dominion in the past two CAA Duals. ODU
ended Hofstra's conference undefeated streak at 63 matches (62-0-1) and the
Pride's winning streak at 60 last January. Prior to that defeat, the Pride's
last conference loss came on February 17, 1999 when
the Broncs of Rider beat the Pride, 28-10, in an East Coast Wrestling
Association (ECWA) match.
Hofstra will return to the
friendly confines of the Mack Sports Complex next Friday, January 22 when the
Pride entertain #19 Missouri at 7 p.m.
