DeLand, FL (Sept. 20) - Robert Hodge converted a penalty kick with 17:34 left in regulation as the Stetson Men's Soccer team remained undefeated with a 1-0 win over Hofstra on the second day of the Stetson University Tournament.
Stetson (5-0) earned the championship of its tournament with the win, after also defeating Saint Joseph's 4-0 on Friday night, when the Pride defeated Jacksonville 3-1. Hofstra concludes non-conference play with a 2-4 record after playing all six of its games away from home.
Hofstra controlled play throughout the first half, holding a 7-2 edge in shots a 5-1 edge in corner kicks in the opening stanza. However Stetson goalkeeper Logan Potter was able to keep the game scoreless with three saves, stopping headers from junior forward Johannes Grahn (Tibro, Sweden) and junior midfielder Joseph Amendolare (Greenlawn, NY), and a shot from senior midfielder Rob Youhill (Harrogate, England).
Hofstra caught a break in the 61st minute, as Stetson's Jonathan Mendoza made a bid to break the scoreless deadlock, but his shot hit the crossbar. Senior defender Richard Martinez (Highland, NY) and junior forward Demont Mitchell (Delray Beach, FL) put shots on net in the 67th and 69th minute, respectively, that Potter saved, and the Pride was whistled for a foul in the box minutes later to set up the winning goal.
Potter finished with five saves to get the shutout for the Hatters, which were outshot 13-8. Sophomore goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Haddam, CT) had one save in the 89th minute, as Stetson did not have a shot on net until the penalty kick.
Seniors Rory McCrea (Sherburn-In-Elmet, England) and Jamal Neptune (East Windsor, NJ) were named to the All-Tournament team for the Pride, along with junior midfielder Max Ribbens (Amsterdam, Netherlands), who made his debut for Hofstra on Friday.
Hofstra will next be in action when it opens Colonial Athletic Association play with a road game at Georgia State next Saturday at 7 p.m.
