Hempstead, NY -- Steve
Yarsinsky drove in a career-high seven runs off a grand slam and a
three-run homer, while Chris Wychock and Austin Harclerode each added
four RBIs for Towson as Hofstra fell to the Tigers, 17-1, in a
rain-shortened CAA contest Sunday afternoon at University Field.
Spencer
Patton (1-2) allowed just one hit in five innings out of the bullpen
for Towson, picking up the win in the seven-inning game. Hofstra
mustered just two hits, scoring its only run off a second-inning
throwing error in falling to 7-30 overall and 3-18 in CAA play.
Towson
scored three runs in the third and fourth innings before sealing the
win with a seven-run seventh, taking two out of three in the series in
improving to 24-21 and 9-9 overall.
Senior
centerfielder Nick Panzarella and junior catcher Elliot Hagburg were
the only Hofstra hitters to log a base hit. The Pride still was able to
sustain early threats against Tigers starter Wes Shifflett. Hofstra got
leadoff man Mark Stuckless to third base with one out in the first but couldn't get the
run in.
After Towson
picked up two runs on three hits in the top of the second, Hofstra
worked two walks, picking up a run when junior John Kenny advanced to
second on a wild pitch and stole third. Catcher Jason Stiffler
struggled to grip the wet ball, launching the throw into leftfield to
allow Kenny to score.
Yarsinsky
gave the Tigers a formidable lead in the third, taking Hofstra junior
starter Rob Kumbatovic deep to center for a three-run home run. Kumbatovic went 3 1/3 innings, falling to 3-7.
The
Tigers added three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth before
Yarsinsky added a grand slam off a tree beyond centerfield, chasing
Pride reliever Brody Fontaine with one-out in the seventh. Fontaine, a
senior left-hander, pitched three innings out of the bullpen.
Hofstra will return to University Field on Tuesday when it hosts Long Island University in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
