Storrs, CT - Maya Moore had 23 points and eight rebounds and Tina Charles added 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the No. 1 ranked Connecticut Huskies to a 91-46 victory over Hofstra in Gampel Pavilion on Friday evening at the WBCA Classic.
Hofstra was led by sophomore guard Nicole Capurso (Staten Island, NY), who had nine points and a team-high three assists.
Hofstra, which was off to its best start since starting the 1997-98 season 4-0, falls to 3-1 with the loss. Connecticut improves to 4-0, while winning its 43rd straight game. In addition, the win was the 700th in the career of Connecticut Head Coach Geno Auriemma.
The last time Hofstra started a season 3-1 was in 2006-07 when the Pride went on to finish 26-8 and advance to the WNIT quarterfinals.
The Huskies would score the first five points of the game before Hofstra got on the board, courtesy of a layup from red-shirt sophomore guard Candice Bellocchio (Staten Island, NY) at the 18:07 mark. The Pride would trail 8-7 and have the ball before a block by Charles led to a fast break bucket from Moore that kick-started a 12-0 run for Connecticut. Hofstra's lone Connecticut native, senior guard Sam Brigham (Simsbury, CT), would end the run at the 11:49 mark to make the score 20-9 in favor of UConn.
Trailing 36-15 later in the half, Hofstra would go on a mini-spurt as a basket by senior center Jess Fuller (Queens, NY) followed by a bucket from red-shirt sophomore forward Marie Malone (Virginia Beach, VA) made the score 36-19 with 2:43 to play before intermission.
Hofstra would trail 43-23 at the break as Malone sank a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left in the opening stanza.
Connecticut would score eight of the first 10 points in the second half to end any thoughts of a Hofstra comeback as it would go on to defeat the Pride in the second all-time meeting between the two schools.
Hofstra also got seven points and five rebounds from Fuller, as well as seven points from Bellocchio.
Hofstra has a short turnaround before its next contest as the Pride will face Clemson on Saturday at 5 p.m. in day two action at the WBCA Classic. The Tigers lost, 86-67, to Richmond in the first game of the classic on Friday.
