PRIDE WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT

9/24/2008 5:00:00 PM

Nancy Wagenbrenner (Berlin, Germany) and Charlia Warner (Bridgetown, Barbados) scored goals 31 seconds apart in the second half, snapping a scoreless tie as the Hofstra Pride posted a 2-1 non-conference road victory over Quinnipiac Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman goalie Amanda Heyde (Yorktown Heights, NY) turned aside two of the three shots she faced, helping the Pride improve to 6-1. The Bobcats fell to 2-6.

Heyde nearly completed her second straight shutout before Kate Van Nostrand scored off a corner with nine minutes remaining. It marked the first time in three games the Pride surrendered a goal, ending the team's shutout mark at 252:42.

Heyde and counterpart Jenna Grossman started strong. Heyde stopped the only shot on goal she faced in the first half. The Pride generated good scoring chances off Grossman, firing five shots on goal in the opening 35 minutes.

Hofstra finally broke through 4:59 into the second half. Wagenbrenner's first goal of the season put her team ahead at Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. The sophomore midfielder took Kristin Thompson's (Santa Cruz, Trinidad) pass from the left side before shooting low to the right for her second career goal.

Warner added an insurance goal almost a half-minute later, notching her team-leading eighth goal by beating Grossman on the left-hand side for a 2-0 Pride lead. Warner has logged at least one point in every game this season.

Van Nostrand's goal at the 61:00 mark gave the Bobcats a late chance at a comeback. But Heyde improved to 3-0 in her career while Grossman finished with eight saves. Hofstra out-shot Quinnipiac, 16-5, and established a 9-3 edge in penalty corners.

The Pride improved to 1-1 on the road and will next be in action Sunday afternoon when it hosts CAA-rival Drexel at 1 p.m. at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. That contest marks the start of conference play.
